Tanitizanite Ring - Complaint
Review by TLC1LPN4UT on 2011-06-18
GEORGE TOWN, GRAND CAYMAN -- May 4th, After attending several lectures on how great/cheap Diamonds Internation were by the cruise shopping specialist,(carnivial Freedom). At the store, I found a ring I liked, not sure I wanted to purchase. Ring was 4200.00.After speaking with store mgn. We agreeded I put 300.00(cash) on the ring, and when I returned to the states Monday May 9th. I would contact the store, let them know if I were going to purchase ring. If I decieded not to purchase ring, the 300.00 was to be refunded. I ask for receipt, sales clerk filledoutinvoice. Itcontained my name, address,
information about the ring (4200.00-300.00 with balance).

if I decided to purchase. Monday May 9th. I contacted the store, only to be told, MGN NOT AVAILABLE, I explain I wasn't going to purchase ring, and I wanted a refund. Clerk stated"would have to speat to mgn".I e-mailed mgn, no response, e-mailed shopping specialist from cruise. She responded via e-mail. she would contact store mgn. for me. Three wks had passed. I e-mailed manadger explaining that husband had lost job, could not purchase ring and wanted a refund. No response, called store, mgn said she had taken vacation, I told her I wanted refund, Did ask her to send picture of ring.

She did, I e-mailed her back" told her I wanted refund. Thats when she responded via e-mail she would give me IN STORE CREDIT. I contacted D. I. via phone, was told I would have to file complaint. I then contacted then via e-mail. Told them I wanted refund, they responded next day via e-mail.

Told me I would receive IN STORE CREDIT. Please help me get my money back.
D. I. hasn't lost any money, no restocking fees.

They gained 300.00 dollars of my hard earned money, and I trusted the store mgn. that if I dittn't purchase ring this money would be refunded to me. I DON'T WANT A STORE CREDIT, I WANT MY MONEY BACK.

WARNING, DON'T MAKE A HAST DECISION AS I HAVE, DON'T BELIEVE WHAT YOU HEAR
AND ONLY HALF OF WHAT YOU SEE.

Since Carnival's shopping specialist was involved with recommending these people, they should provide you with some help in dealing with them. Contact Carnival Cruise Lines (3655 NW 87th Ave., Miami, FL 33178) at 888-227-6482. There have been other complaints about the honesty of Diamonds International. It's hard to get any satisfaction with them since they are outside of US jurisdiction. You might also try contacting the UK Embassy in Washington, DC (representatives for the Caymans) and see if their trade attache can be of assistance to you: 202-588-6500.

"I would contact the store, let them know if I were going to purchase ring. If I decieded not to purchase ring, the 300.00 was to be refunded. I ask for receipt, sales clerk".

The above sounds like an odd arrangement. The fact that you put money on the ring was to get them to hold it for you. In other words, they can't sell it to another customer if you were going to show up for it. When a shop does this for you, they are entitled to keep your deposit. Just why did you have to pay down $300 if you were not sure. You could have just phoned on the Monday to let them know if you wanted it. But then you ran the risk of another customer coming up and buying it before you. For the loss of the chance to make the sale to another customer, the forfeiting of your $300 sounds reasonable. You say they told you you would get a refund. That would be both an odd and an unfair arrangement where the store has nothing to gain. When such an arrangement is unfair in your favour, you need it in writing. Did your receipt state clearly that if you decided not to purchase you will get a full refund?

She contacted them only 5 days later so not too much damage was done but James236 is correct. You denied them the opportunity to sell the ring to someone else. I think a store credit is fair compensation. You would lose your money in most instances elsewhere. Take a good look at the paperwork for the wording involving merchandise deposits. What is signed on paper trumps whatever was said verbally. Get a nice pair of earrings and don't deal with them in the future.

I believe not what I am told, but what is written. That is the only reliable way to do business.

The question is, what is in writing?

James, your right, decision made in haste(Was afraid I would be late to board ship.)Mgn &clerks very pleasant,Each time I started to leave, ring was discounted x2.Invoice written up(still not sure)Contacted bank(sense I hadn't notified bank before trip, account on hold, until HUSBAND could verify I was the one making the transaction) B/C of fraud.MAKES SENSE,Could have used credit card As beautiful as the ring was,I decided to wait. As I was leaving, manager ask" WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO HOLD RING,WHEN YOU GET HOME,CALL ME WITH CARD #If YOU STILL WANT IT".I ask if I needed to put money down
Mgn.said"If YOU WANT TO"I gave her 300.00 cash.(MAGIC ?)>I ask her to use invoice as receipt,If I decided to purchase ring, this amount would be
deducted from total,If not, would I get my money back? SHE(MANAGER)SAID YES,NOT TO WORRY,I WOULD TAKE RING.MY THINKING WAS"I HAD NOTHING TOLOOSE. IF I DID NOT PURCHASE THE RING, MY MONEY WOULD BE REFUNDED

No this was not in writing. MANAGER ASK ME, IF SHE COULD HOLD THE RING UNTIL I RETURNED TO THE STATES ON MONDAY, I NEVER ASK HER! I would never put money on anything, unless I knew it was refundable. Diamonds International offer a full refund on merchandise if returned with in 30 day of purchase.
I don't know why they are refusing to refund my money, not a in store credit.
IT SHOULD BE SIMPLE.
They are not out any fees, due to;
inspection for loose stones etc. cleaning.
I left the store Wed.eveing.I'll assuming the ring was unavailable, Thur. Friday and sat.
Even tho the Manager was unavailable, I told clerk that I wasn't going to purchase ring.
They were notified within 5 days.
