Enterprise Rent-A-Car Complaint - No credit card no rental

Complaint
Review by couponwars53 on 2011-12-01
OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA -- We needed to rent a car from Enterprise to travel out of state. But, in order to get a rental you have to have a credit card. Not a debit, credit/debit but a cc. Me personally, I think it's stupid that you can't use a credit/debit card to get a car. Not everyone has a cc let alone qualify for one. With the way the economy is now it's a bit hard to get one not to mention, people are already in debt and are trying to get rid of cc debt. Car rental companies need to make it a little bit easier for people that have the money to get a rental. Otherwise they are just going to lose out and the people will take their business else where. Is that really worth it? Change your policy if it's company policy to help cater better to your consumers.

Think about this from the rental car company's perspective. Let's say you're very creditworthy. Then I may not feel too nervous renting you a $23,000 car. On the other handm if you have $729 in your checking account, I might be leary about what happens if you don't return it or have an accident. I don't know if this is related...

This is not just Enterprise. I haven't rented a car in ages, but every car I ever rented, you were required to have a major credit card. Would you rent an expensive piece of equipment to someone who probably did not have the means to repace it if it got destroyed? I wouldn't.

I beg to differ. It must be an independent deal of sorts. I always rent from our local Enterprise for this exact reason. They are the only company that will rent a car, up to a certain class (anything under an SUV), WITHOUT a credit card, or even a debit card. They only require a $250 cash deposit. Period. Everyone else requires a credit card, which in turn places a $500 security deposit freeze on your funds. Not Enterprise. I think they are on to something, because that joint is always rocking and rolling with business. I think they figure that they will take the occasional risk, but in return they gain much more business than they would've ordinarily turned away.

Here's the Enterprise policy on the web site

"Using Debit Cards in the US
Although you may use a debit card, pre-paid card, or another form of payment to pay for the final charges on the vehicle, if you reserve a vehicle through this website, you will need to provide a major credit card at the time of the rental to secure the rental transaction. A major credit card is a card that is supported by a pre-determined line of credit, and not a bank account, or a pre-paid balance.

Local Enterprise Rent-A-Car Offices may accept debit cards, pre-paid cards, or other forms of payment to secure the rental transaction. To reserve a vehicle without a major credit card, please contact the local office directly."

In the Oklahoma City metro there are several Enterprise locations and each one is a bit different in policies. I'm not sure if any of them accept a debit card but as my good friend Justice-4-All pointed out some locations do. Call around to the different locations and you might find one that will.

Something in my noggin tells me the Enterprise on Shields and I-240 and the one on 15th street in Midwest City allows debit cards to secure the rental but I'm not 100% sure.

I find it laughable you can rent a car with credit card with a $300 credit limit but you can't rent a car with debit card with $10,000 balance backing it. That's just nutz.
