Korean Air Complaint - Smoking On Board Has Destroyed Me

Complaint
Review by solomonolin44 on 2012-01-07
ASIA -- Its been a few years scince but travelling at least twice a year from Asia to Los Angeles in flights 90% with incredibly stupid smokers has caused me horrible emphesyma. I used Korean Air because of cheape fares. I hated the arrogant unsmiliing staff and food. I flew at least 35 return flights. One especially the pilot was going to make an emergency landing to Alaska. The Korean passengers refused to head his anouncments to cease smoking!! Even their ashtrays were smoking. I'm checking to see if I can get a class action suit going.

I am sorry you are sick.

A couple things you might want to think about as I bet they will come up if you file suit against Korean Air:
1. How will you prove it was the smoking on the plane, and not anywhere else that caused the illness? Surely you must have been to restaurants, bars or hotels that allowed smoking over the past decade or two. Maybe a family member smoked around you when you were younger?
2. Most airlines used to allow smoking - even through the mid-90s. How will you show it was the Korean flights and not on any other airline trips that caused your problems?
3. Many still healthy people flew on planes that allowed smoking a lot more than you did, especially flight attendants and pilots in the USA today. I bet a lawyer would say that genetics or other environment factors - not a handful of flights a year - played a major role in you getting sick.

I am not saying don't pursue what you feel you need to do, but just think about how you will answer those questions.

I think you are probably beating a dead dog.

They still allow smoking on international flights? I thought that, especially after 9/11, that matches and lighters weren't allowed on planes.

Genuine you missed the comment in the post

If you are going to try to prove that x number of flights that lasted y.z hours each caused you to contract emphysema, I wish you luck. My guess is that will be a hard slog.

Ben_There covered the issue pretty well.

Did flying on heavily smoking flights help? No. Was it the sole cause of your illness, probably not.

35 return trips or about the equivalent flying of a bit less than 1 year for a TPAC flight attendant. Considering we have flight attendants who are very "mature" and don't seem to suffer higher incidences of lung disease..... evidence doesn't seem to support your contention.
