We purchased a warranty from Guardian for a used vehicle. After 5,000 miles the car started to have problems. We followed the contract rules and obtained prior approval and even took the car to the repair shop they recommended. The mechanic told us that the motor needed replaced. The car was burning a quart of oil per 100 miles and had a knock in the motor.

The engine and all lubricated parts was a covered component in our warranty. When guardians inspector came to review the car his report stated that "nothing was wrong with it." We ended up paying almost $200 for the diagnosis fee. Now a few months later the car is definelty in need of a new motor. Not only were they jerks at the company every time we called but were also a#! h&^%! to the secretary at the repair shop they recommended! A rep. there actually said he was "tired of dealing with our SH*T! I wouldn't buy a warranty from them - definetly go through a company backed by a large insurance company (ie. Nationwide, etc.)

It's been my experience, that most extended warranties are worth LESS than the paper they are printed on.

Get a second estamate. Try to find a friend in the business or a friend of a friend. $200 sounds like a lot to conclude a motor's bad and how much to replace. Assuning the result is the same, present it back to the warranty company with request for the second estamte costs covered. If they still won't pay, it's time to file suit, of course now with attorneys fees and court costs. In fact, if it goes that way, your motor probably will let go well before the case is heard, so throw in car rental and maybe some other misc. I'd certainly let the warranty company know this is the path you will take if they don't honor their policy.

...............And then, after all that, rub a bald head for luck, smoke a peace pipe and buy a lottery ticket, the outcome will likely be the same.

I have been VERY pleased with the Guardian warranty. I bought the gold coverage about 2 years ago--and I was hesitant to do so at the time. I thought it would be a rip off. It the last 2 years, Guardian has covered almost every non-maintenance item for my 1998 Volvo V70, including calipers, rotors, A/C, sensors, etc. I have been shocked by the quality of the service. Every time my mechanics call, there is no issue--they just go ahead and cover it. I'm not sure how the comprehensive and standard plans are, though. If you have the option, go for the gold plan. It cost me $1,900 for 3 yrs/38,500 miles and I have easily gotten twice that ... more >>
