Verizon Wireless - Repair vs Replace

Review by melissa253 on 2012-10-29
My son dropped his cell and cracked the screen. The phone works fine but the screen now has a 'spider web' type crack on the glass. I called Verizon to ask if it could be fixed and they said 'yes'. They gave me the number of the Co they use for repairs. I called this place and they told me that it would cost $210.00 and if I dropped it off on Thursday, I could have it back on Saturday. $210.00 ? to fix a phone that I only paid $129.00 and we got a $50.00 rebate. Really?

I called Verizon back and told then that was crazy. Why would I spend $210.00 to fix a phone when I can come in right now and buy that same phone, brand new phone for $99.00 ?

Like most things it's cheaper to replace then repair.

You're forgetting that you likely paid the subsidized price that's only available for those who commit to a 2 year service contract with Verizon. The retail prices of phones are much higher than the subsidized price. For example a Samsung Galaxy S III costs $200 if you sign up for 2 years of service. If you just want to purchase the phone outright it'll cost you $600. Likewise a new iphone 5 (64 GB) costs $400 with contract, and a whopping $850 without one. Even basic phones like a Samsung Gusto 2 (standard basic flip phone) costs $80 with a contract. $200 without.

"Why would have spend $210.00 to fix a phone when I can come in right now and buy that same phone brand new phone for $99.00 ?"

Because you'll have to extend your contract with Verizon another 2 years in order to get the subsidized price again. Not a problem if you like Verizon's service. But you are in bed with them so to speak for while if you go that route.

Depends entirely if you bought the phone retail or got the subsidized contract price.

Because the phone cost more than $129. When you buy a phone you extend your plan for 2 years and they offer you a heavy discount for doing so. The "off the street" price of the phone is actually much higher. For example, I paid $199 for an iPhone with a 2-year plan but the phone without the plan costs about $600. If I decline the insurance, then $600 is the actual replacement cost. You may do better to replace his phone with one purchased on eBay or Craigslist.

Thank you guys. It never occurred to me that I would have to re-up with Verizon for another 2 yrs to get those low phone prices

I bought the galaxy 3 retail and FoDaddy is right about the cost, but then I have it on prepaid service. I would rather pay for it to be repaired rather than the cost of another phone.
