State Farm - Mislead about policy

Auto Insurance - Complaint

Last month, I decided to change auto insurance providers because I was getting nowhere with my old insurance company. I did an online search and discovered State Farm had the best quote for the coverage I needed. Since my car has been out of order for several months and I'm not driving it (it sits in my driveway and hasn't moved), I needed the bare minimum required by the state to keep my license. My state has no such thing as non-owner insurance. I phoned up my nearest agent and was put through to one of the representatives. I began the new policy and canceled the old one. However, my representative did not tell me that my parents needed to be included on this policy. I've been with Travelers, Geico, and Progressive and none of them ever charged me for other members in my house being a liability. I was shocked when I got a notice saying that my policy was higher than previously discussed for this reason. I immediately called my representative and she asked me to send in paperwork showing that my parents had their own policy. It took until today to finally get the status and I was told nothing could be done. Needless to say, I'm quite irritated. It's one thing to know this up front, but I felt I was mislead. The representative knew from the beginning that I live with my parents but said nothing. Buyer beware!

The only reason your parents would need to be on the policy is if their name(s) are on the title.
If that's the case then you should of told the representative. They would be the primary driver and you would be the secondary.

If the car is in your name then there's no reason for your parents to be on the policy.

You are leaving something out.

One of the *nice* things as a State Farm customer for many many years is the rates staying low. I believe State Farm is proactive in identifying situations such as what they *suspected* in your case to reduce risk.

What I don't understand is that if you showed proof, that should become a non-issue. I don't know what they meant by "nothing could be done" in this context. Why not?

State Farm has done right by me for a long time, and I would highly recommend them. I'm sorry you are having trouble. Maybe this will still be worked out?

I have dealt with insurance companies before that have insisted it is their policy to include all licensed drivers in the household on the policy. It doesn't matter whose name is on the title and it doesn't matter if they never drive the vehicle, they must be included on the policy. I even had one insurance company insist they must add my non driving teenage children with the appropriate teenage rate to get a policy. I refused to do business with them of course, so the OP may be truthful about what they were told.

Unfortunate for you and your parents is the fact that in your state this rule applies: My state has no such thing as non-owner insurance.

If you do NOT have ownership on the car then it goes to whomever has it. That is why it is under your parents. Ask them to sign the title over to you and then you can get the rate you want without including them.

No, my parents are not on my title and I am not on theirs. I may contact corporate and explain again. I still don't understand why they are requiring my parents to be on it.
