FERNDALE, MICHIGAN -- I bought a 2012 Focus SE in August 2012. Lousy mileage, poor transmission. We traded in a 2008 Civic w/80,000 miles. Focus quality doesn't even come close to the Civic. The mileage with the focus is 26/28 at best and is driven very conservatively on freeway's and mileage really stinks. I have an 2002 Intrepid that gets as good or better mileage. Very sorry we got rid of the Civic. After first of the year we will be trading in the Focus on a Dodge Dart. Ford has mass produced the Focus to be a "throw-away" vehicle. Trade-in for this 2012 Focus is 9k to 11k with only 7,600 miles on it. How very pathetic, Ford, shame on you. Shades of the Escort and Pinto have returned in the Focus!!! Never another Ford product, EVER! Wish we could start a product reimbursement claim from Focus owners who are as dissatisfied as we are.

I have a 2012 Focus SE and I love it. It commonly gets 28-32 mpg city which is great for a non-hybrid. We drove it to Myrtle Beach and it got between 38-40mpg highway. The transmission is a new type for the USA. It has no torque converter. It uses a manual clutch in an automatic mode. It's actually really fun to drive once you get used to it. And in "Sport" mode you can control the transmission with buttons on the shifter to act like a manual. Sorry you didn't like yours but this car is the best vehicle I have ever owned and that is coming from the son of a Master Technician for Toyota.

I think I would steer clear of the Dodge Dart also.
You had a good car 08 Honda with 80k, hardly broken in. Why did you get rid of it?
That Honda would easily run to 150k with minimal problems.

The Focus is an entry level vehicle sold at a very modest price point. It's basic transportation with no frills. Don't expect more than it is. Many rental companies use this vehicle because it is cheap and reliable. When my car was in the body shop I drove a Focus for two weeks and liked it. It was fun to drive, good on gas and easy to park. I would consider it for a 2nd vehicle not my primary.
