COURTLAND, ALABAMA -- I was awaking last night by my smoke alarms going off. My house was full of smoke. We were able to determine it was the clothes dryer and remove it from the house. I had removed a gown from the dryer 1 and 1/2s earlier. I did not remove the other clothes. I did not smell or see anything at that time. Dryer was off, door was closed so light was off. I clean lint filter after each use. Dryer less than 3 years old.

Just be aware that this can happen and be safe.

Have you checked the pipes that channel the air from your dryer out of the house? That can get clogged with lint and could set it afire as well.

Clutzy has a good suggestion. This can commonly be caused by blockage within the vent system. Clean out the entire vent system from the outside in.

Dryer has a built in control that will shut it off if it gets to hot for any reason and it was working. Whirlpool sent a service man out to check everything. No lint buildup, no electrical problems, plug and breakerbox fine. They could find no reason for fire. The fire was the clothes inside of dryer. There was nothing flammable ever put in dryer. WHIRLPOOL REPLACED DRYER even thou it was out of warranty

I had a co-worker who previously worked in insurance. She told me the #1 cause of house fires at that time were clothes dryers catching on fire. It really gives me a warm cozy feeling thinking about it. I never leave my dryer on at night or when I leave my home. In addition, I remove my clothes after drying and leave the door open until the dryer has cooled.

I really don't know about some of our appliances now. We've all heard stories of appliances suddenly turning themselves on due to the electronics. This also happens sometimes in the middle of a thunderstorm w/lightning. I don't pretend to understand all of this but it spooks me.
