Insufficient Funds Fee - Checking account fees

This past Friday I received a bank statement from Chase and to my shock and horror I was charged over $450 in insufficient funds fees. I immediately went to the bank first thing Monday morning to see why this was happening since there was plenty of $ in my account to cover all the withdrawels that had been made and every time I checked my balance via the ATM or phone lines everything was fine until the bank started taking my $ from me without my knowledge.

I was told by the Assistant manager that her hands were tied and I would need to wait until the next day to let the Branch Manager view my account. I then had to contact the bank again on my own because they never contacted me and I ended up going down to meet with the Branch Manager myself. She assured me it was not an error on thier part and again thier hands were tied --- come on! You take over $450 from someone's account without thier knowledge and there is nothing they can do about it --- sounds so convinient doesn't it? I left the bank in tears because no one was willing to help me. I came home and immediately called a Chase customer service rep. who was more than pleasent and understaning. She was able to reverse $128 of the fees. At least I will have some money to feed my three children until I have another pay check on Friday. Seems like if a service rep. on the customer service line was albe to assist me, then a Branch Manager should have at least some leverage to help customers --- if that is truely the case (which I am very doubtful that it is) I think my morales and ethics would not allow me to work for such a company that would steal from their own loyal customers. I think the Brach Manager should consider finding a new job because she is either not good at the one she has or really had no intentions of helping me no matter what.

I was obviously not to blame in the theft that accured with my account.

Of course the answer to all this is to not overdraw. It's a lesson a lot of us have had to learn the hard way.

That's not the case here, SloMo...as stated the poster said he had plenty to cover the funds.

I think you should take it as a warning and put your next paycheck in another bank come Friday.

How is your check register? According to your calculations, does your check register show a mistake on you or the banks side? You should always use a bank register to keep track of your acct. Never use the phone lines or the ATM to keep track. I was in a similar situation, along time ago, doing just what you did. I used to keep track of my acct using the ATM and phone, and I went deep in the red. I was in the military and got into really big trouble. If you keep an accurate accounting of all of your transactions, at least you will have a leg to stand on if the bank shows something different.

I'm the only one who thinks this story has holes in it? She claims she had plenty of $, but if that were true, then the bank would immediately be able to go over the transactions with her and at what point they showed she was in the negative. But they just turned her away? You can go online at most banks and see a baily ending balance and figure it out yourself as well. Bottomline - not enough info and to be charged $450 in fees is ALOT of overdrafts...sounds fishyyyyy

I agree, but if she would keep an accurate check register instead of relying on the ATM and/or the phone, she may not have been in this situation in the first place.

CRH hits the nail right on the head. People have become to lazy to keep a check register and check balance online instead. What they don't see there are the unposted electronic items, and just assume that whatever they see as a balance is theirs to spend. And this is what happens. As someone said, if you have an accurate register than all you have to do is show it to the bank, and they either have to disprove it, or admit their mistake.

It's ok to charge an unlimited amount for an overdraft to normal people. I bet the fees per charge exceeded the amount they paid out but several times.

For the most part the sentiment is:

    1. Well you should have known better.
    2. Teaches you to have no money.
    3. I could have told you that.
    4. Dmn, it happened to me but I won't dare mention the embarrasing fact.

These companies make money off of the consumer for ala carte charges and fees that have no limit but what really gets me it that she probably doesn't 'qualify' for a limited overdraft account but does qualify to be charged an unlimited amount. And, it is the attitude of di ... more >>

$450.00 does not sound fishyyyyy to me. I just went through a situation in which I was charged way more than $450.00. Having made an error I admit it was my fault but the way they charge is crazy. Example: if you had 1000.00 bal then you make purchases or payment of 250, 100, 21, 800, 15, 3, and they all hit the bank at the same time Chase will post the 800.00 first leaving a balance of 200 so then the 250, 100, 21, 15 & the three dollar charge will all incurr NSF fees of $30.00 thus leaving you in the hole -$339.00. For a person like myself that deals in numerous transactions in a day of 10 - 15 a day this becomes quite costly. With the 1000 ... more >>

Chase changed the order in which our transactions were processed to make the largest transaction come out first and then over drew us ten times on susequent transactions. We called to have this fixed and they told us that we would have to wait until the next day. On the next day five more transactions that were pending posted to our account and we were charged with fees for these as well (even though our account should have had plenty of money) they counted as overdrawn because of the insufficient funds fees that we were trying to have fixed were still not taken off. They finally refunded some of our money for the the first ten transactions t ... more >>

This has happened to me as well, but due to overdrawn account (i know it was my fault) But i overdrew my account by 15 dollars, and they tacked on a 240.00 ISF fee.................. for 15 dollars. I called my bank and they refused to waive it but they agreed not to charge me anymore till i get paid which was Friday. I look at my account again, 70USD fee... i re-called about it and they said they didn't know why someone would tell me that because they cant do that... Chase is seriously messed up... just search chase insufficient funds and you'll see a million complaints about ridiculous customer service and amounts being with drawn from pe ... more >>

Folks... please please please forget the megabanks and find a local Credit Union... I'm no banker, but I know that they are not the merciless money grubbers that the international banks are and the service is a hundred times better.
