Losing My Deposited Timeshare Week Plus the Cost of Exchange.
StarStarEmpty StarEmpty StarEmpty StarBy -
Rating: 2/51

MIAMI, FLORIDA -- Had booked a week of my deposited timeshare for the week of Christmas, check in date was 12/24/22. Tested positive for Covid late 12/23, called early on 12/24 to the resort who told me to contact Interval where I exchanged the week and did so. Was told it was too late to get a refund and my week back since it was the day of check in.

Called the resort back, asked if I could come with Covid and of course they said no. Called interval back on the 26th since it was Christmas spoke to a manager and they said there is nothing they could do since it was passed my check in time. Long story, but solutions was you are not getting your money back or your deposited week back. So sad I lose with getting Covid. First bad experience I had with Interval but this was not right, they couldn't help in any way.

Is Interval International adequetly protecting customer's personal information?

MIAMI, FLORIDA -- In 2013, I was asked by someone I considered a professional colleague and friend to do her a favor and fill a VP level role on a temporary basis at Interval International (Interval Leisure Group, INC., IILG) after at least 3 turnovers for the position within about a 6 month period. I did so with the expressed commitment the position would become permanent after the holidays and the conclusion of major business transactions occurring at the time. Among other concerns, I also uncovered a potential SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley) violation due to a lack of data security. (Please see “Ethics: The cost of violations and how to mitigate them.”)

During a sexual harassment investigation involving an IT Contractor, I discovered that data security was at risk due to the use of dozens of high-level highly compensated IT and Finance Contractors whom had almost unlimited access to confidential customer and company information. Despite diligent effort, I was unable to locate records that background checks or drug checks had been executed for these workers nor had their identity been validated or the basic security protocols followed, such as a photograph for their security access ID badge or their vehicle information. Yet they had security clearance that exceeded that of many executives. The company had an expensive security system in place at every door as well as security guards, not to mention server servicing and backups yet their failure to consistently apply security procedures to consultants completely undermined these measures. Every employee of the company, including those earning under $10 an hour with little to no access to confidential information submitted to these screenings. However, these contractors were being paid through accounts payable therefore they were not subjected to HR screenings. Additionally, most were hired through various staffing agencies with outdated and/or inconsistent contracts. Based upon an agency contract audit I initiated and managed, I found that most agency contracts either did not require the agency perform these screenings or even if it was stated in the contract, the agency did not actually execute that requirement unless they were specifically asked to do so and I found no records such had occurred. Therefore I identified this known practice created significant risk to employee safety as well as data security.

Data security has increasingly become a major threat to US companies with recent breaches at multiple government agencies, Home Depot, Target, Anthem, Ashley Madison, JPMorgan, Ebay and Sony Pictures just to name a few and the associated costs is easily in the billions.

Interval's quarterly SOX audit never caught the issue. The audit simply did not ask the right questions so everything was checked off and cleared along with executive signatures that they had no concerns about internal systems, quarter after quarter, year after year. Which is likely why I was terminated abruptly as the quarterly statement was being prepared and I would not have signed it without this issue on it. This was the company's long standing practice so apparently no one had ever questioned it. When I repeatedly pushed for corrective action on the potential SOX violation asking that consultants submit to these basic screenings, I was immediately terminated and escorted mid-day from the building. The SVP of Human Resources was well aware of the situation and in fact created or at least significantly contributed to its existence yet remains in position. Additionally, I informed the CEO, COO and Chief Legal Counsel of these concerns as well as other potential business ethics violations. While I have no idea if they addressed the data security issue, they took no action to address the negative impact I suffered.

Most concerning to me is the fact that many tourism and hospitality customers may not realize that IILG manages the back office and therefore customer data for various subsidiaries and partners that may include Trading Places International (TPI), Hyatt Residence Club, Aqua-Aston Hospitality, Vacation Resorts International, VRI Europe, Hyatt Vacation Ownership (HVO), the Hyatt Residence Club, Hyatt Vacation Ownership, other affiliates of Hyatt Hotels Corporation as well as other participants in their timeshare and cruise exchange programs. This potentially exposes hospitality service providers and millions of their customers to data breach without their slightest level of awareness. For example, who would have the resources and perspective to link burglaries of the families of these various providers while they travel? Would investigators be able to identify a pattern and source or would they simply conclude occurrences were unrelated?

Trading Our Site

We traded our Las Vegas 5 star (Elara), a 1 bedroom with 4 TVs & a jaquzzi in our room for a studio in Puerto Vallarta. Studio means 1 room with a hot plate, sink, tiny fridge & coffee machine. I did not realize this & agreed to it, once arrived, no change was available. It took 2 days to connect by phone & then, because I had agreed to the studio, no change was possible.

Avoid at All Costs

MIAMI -- I work for II via an agency and I have to tell everyone to AVOID, AVOID, AVOID! They are doing as little as possible to help members with the Covid 19 crisis, all they are offering is an Accommodation Certificate that is not worth the paper it's written on! It's completely worthless and has to be used up by 31/12/2020, also if you do take this worthless piece of rubbish you can only book 30 days or LESS in advance of when you want to go making it even more worthless! To add insult to that you can get a replacement week good for one year but you have to PAY TO USE IT!

They refuse to give you a refund of any fees you already paid so that's $209 x thousands of members who are having to cancel due to the virus that II are keeping on top of that if you have booked a getaway you don't get any money back at all! So regardless of what you paid for your getaway you get no money back but you can swap it for later in the year and pay the difference if it costs more! Total rip off! They don't give a damn about there members or the staff who work for them. Other companies are going out of their way to help people. All II want to do is keep your money and give you nothing in return that you can use anyway!

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY EVER! All they want to do is sell their rip of All Inclusives that are totally not worth the money, you can go to the same resort for a quarter of the price doing it yourself! As someone who works on their behalf I have inside knowledge of how bad they really are!

Interval International Is No Longer Worth Belonging To

CALIFORNIA -- I have been a member of Interval International for about 20 years, but am seriously deciding not to renew and definitely will not deposit my 2-bedroom in Palm Desert as I've done for many years because we have used Interval to travel to other destinations even though you have to pay to deposit your week and pay to exchange your week when you find somewhere to go.

Also, I took out a week vacation for my daughter last Oct.2019 who has asthma but she hadn't had a vacation for many years to used one of my weeks to get her a week in Mexico. Now, with the Corona Virus her Dr. will not approve her traveling anywhere if it means a flight, and her Company will not allow any employees to travel domestically or internationally. I spoke to Mary at customer service to see if they would give her a credit for future travel or give her a refund - The answer was NO since I didn't take out insurance for her last year before the Virus was even known about. Almost all flights are allowing cancellation or at least a credit for future travel - but, not INTERVAL INTERNATIONAL.

Additionally, when I first started using Interval to Exchange my Timeshare, there were many that did not require mandatory "All Inclusive" meal plans. Now, you must pay up to $350 per person per day at some resorts and since we are in our late 70's we can't eat or drink that much. The only resorts we can find now with no mandatory meal plans are not recommended by Interval (neither 4 or 5 star resorts). We always bragged that Interval was so much better than RCI and our friends agreed, but now we feel neither is necessary for travel. And, if you like a particular resort, you can go on Redweek.com and purchase some for as little as $1. NOT A HAPPY MEMBER OF INTERVAL.

Interval International Timeshare Experience Is an Exercise in Frustration

MIAMI, FLORIDA -- I would never recommendation purchasing a timeshare from Interval International. When trying to exchange a resort there is always very limited availability for exchange. My home resort incorrectly placed a lock on my timeshare unit over a year ago and I was told the situation would be resolved within 24 hours. Not the case and trying to resolve has been an exercise in frustration. I have friends who have purchased Marriott timeshares and are extremely happy with the customer service unlike my experience with Interval International. I really regret buying this timeshare and looking back should have bought through Marriott.

Exchanged for one property, II gave us a different property

MIAMI, FLORIDA -- We exchanged a week for a specific resort. We are now reviewing the certificate that was sent and it is for an inferior resort next door with a similar name. We have tried to call to fix the error, however the call center has advised us there is nothing they can or will do. We are not mistaken on the resort we agreed to exchange for and will continue to pursue a satisfactory resolution. The call center wants us to call back everyday which is unacceptable. I have investigated the cost difference between the 2 for a week and it approximately $1400 USD. This comes across as a shameful case of switch and bait.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolved this type of issue with II? We recently agreed to take over the timeshare from our parents and will be not likely to be continuing our relationship with II if this is not resolved. (I had an II membership 15+ years ago for many years and out of all the years, only had 1!! successful exchange. In every other instance, we settled on sub par properties that were in out of the way locations). My advice to others is to record any conversations with II when dealing with them. Any suggestions on how to resolve?

Is This Some Sort of Scam Interval International Is Running?

VALENCIA, CALIFORNIA -- I'm usually a skeptical person by nature, but this Interval International Time Share company make it so obvious that I am convinced they are a full on scam. For example, no representative will ever provide you their full names or representative IDs. Who does that in a customer service environment? Are all these reps in some sort of government witness protection program?

Secondly, they constantly pressure you to "deposit" your unused timeshare into their timeshare bank. Then they tell you to renew your membership, otherwise you can't search beyond the date of your membership expiration date. The moment you go ahead and pursue the membership and pay, they tell you "I'm sorry, there is no availability during the period you requested".

Coincidence, no. This has happened to me on 3 separate occasions. Then I deposit my 2 suite villa and they only have Motel 6-like suites available in every other calendar date except for the period I requested. Then folks who supposedly own a simple suite get offered up Villas at no upgrade costs for the exchange. How is that fair to us who paid for the larger villas?

They are the absolute worst in customer service. I would give them negative stars if it was possible. 1/4 star to make a point of how terrible these scammers really are. If you are thinking of joining, don't. Thinking of buying a timeshare, don't. It's one step below a pyramid scheme and two steps above a Ponzi scheme... save your money... travel unencumbered with your money.

Timeshare Value

Rating: 1/51

No, I would not recommend anyone to invest in Interval International. We spent almost $10,000 in timeshare program - converting our resort to points so that we could swap all over the world. We were given this big pitch of how easy it is to swap and how much value we can get for the points but this is misleading and bogus. We are seeing over and over again that there is either limited or no availability for exchanges with our points.

I have been trying since June 2014 to do exchange for Thailand - nothing is available for December 2014. Yet on getaways, there is availability. Why aren't these places offered for exchange. It is like money is taken in advance from members and then we are expected to pay thousands more to take the vacation we want. More and more this is looking like a scam to me! No don't invest and please pass this on to your friends! We are very sorry we wasted our money on these scammers.

Covid 19 cancellation policy

Rating: 1/51

PORTLAND, OREGON -- I made a reservation that was cancelled after the resort was closed due to Covid 19. I was told I could switch it to another reservation. So, I did. They charged me an ADDITIONAL fee for taxes, which they hadn't even paid for the first resort because the resort was closed, and then charged me ANOTHER certificate fee... $175 additional dollars on top of the taxes and resort fee I had already paid. TO TOP IT ALL OFF... the new reservation was cancelled by Interval only a few days later.

So, here I am thrown back into their process again being charged even more money to use my Getaway. Not sure how they think they can do all of this legally. They are the ones who cancelled the reservation....not me! Now, I just want my money back! I am cancelling the VISA payment! Marriott owns Interval. This is a BIG BLACK HOLE FOR MARRIOTT! VERY DISAPPOINTING!
