Brenda - My son is only nine years old, while I admit stealing is wrong, I also think they were to harsh on him. He was up in his room crying for almost an hour because the big men scared him. The other boy with him was not arrested even though it was his idea, I took the chocolate bar to prove a point. I finally gave my son a popsicle to calm him down and help him feel better because a big company is bullying him.

You really set a good example for your 9 year old. Would you rather had him scared at 9 for just stealing cards or scared and 16 in jail for stealing a car. It doens't matter how you try to justify it, it is still wrong and didn't really accomplish much. I understand what you went through. The poor lady was hungry. If Wal-Mart "cared" about her plight they would have taken her to the food court and given her a meal. One quick addition-I just heard on the news that a family sued Giant Eagle grocery chain because their family member stole $300 worth of groceries and some customers tackled him on the way out. In the process, he got suffocated to death. Guess what? The family lost the lawsuit because it was justifiable in the eyes of the law to stop a thief and his death was determined to be his own fault.

I've seen people take a candy bar from the shelf and give to their small child while they waiting in line at the check out...to keep the child from fussing...they didn't just TAKE it...they gave the wrapper to the cashier to scan and PAID for it!

Michelle - You are right they are discrimating against your family. They discrimate against thieves because they don't like people stealing from their store. You can take this to the press if you want, but obviously you stole more than the chocolate bar because well they don't arrest you unless you steal much more. You know why, because people are stealing chocolate bars in front of security because they know who security is and while security is tied up with them their friends are stealing bigger things. They have it set up that way and the person stealing the chocolate bars are the traps.

Hey I eat stuff at Walmart all the time, but, i hold the wrappers in the shopping cart and make sure they charge me for them, period. Now i am no freaking angel, i tried to steal an ,(get this),8track tape with friends doing the same in an old Gemco store,(discount store for those who wasn't born yet, haha), Luckily a nice person,(cute young lady), saved our asses , and let us know to leave the booty, and never do it again- you know we didnt, end of story. It was a 68 cent candy bar. Not a big deal so why didn't you pay for it. you can't walk into any store and eat something off the self and walk out without paying. Stealing is stealing, Once you steal it shows you might steal bigger things. I would of called the police on you.

There is a program, at least i Indiana and Arizona, called S.T.E.M. That stands for Shoplifting Takes Everyone's Money. No matter if it is a fifty cent candy bar or a $150 MP3 player, it is stealing, and honest customers have to pay higher prices to pay for what we call shrinkage, plus offset the cost of security. I was a Loss Prevention Agent for a departement store, and our policy was, all adults were prosecuted, regardless of the value of the merchandise. Kids were not prosecuted.
