Reception Problems

I've hated COMCAST for a long time now, which is why I refuse to have HBO, even tho there are shows I like on there; i don't want to pay them one more penny. I just got a plasma TV and they charge $5/month for high speed definition which I hear is great, but I won't even give them that.

NOW, I'm getting poor reception - you know those little squares where the picture breaks up.

I got 2 opposite suggestions from reps, I couldn't believe it. One said that did I think I could hook up another box if I get it from COMCAST...I said yes, but so far unable to get it. Tonight, same thing, can't watch my new TV because the picture is breaking up.

Now here's the problem. As I recall, I had a similar problem a few years ago, and it wasn't the "box" at all. They said that it was a wire (that wasn't a legitimate cable wire leading to my upstairs TV that has basic cable) and that it wasn't the box. It took some guy on his first day 5 hours (no kidding) to get it to get mediocre reception and I was billed for it. Why should I be billed for something that is a COMCAST problem. I just know that they're going to come over and say the same thing, on it's not the box, it's these wires (which they since connected) and tell me they'll have to recharge me to re-connect them - or something. They'll FIND something. I'm so so so sick of COMCAST but I fear that the grass may not be greener on the other side.

So I want to do this right. I want to contact the correct sources who oversee comcast if there are any .... they have no right to keep billing me for problems that are theirs. I didn't do anything. I'm just a consumer, a very frustrated one at that.

It might be worth a service call. A few years ago, I had the same problem with the old style analog cable system - about once a year the connector on the phone pole would corrode and the picture would get poor. They would come out and clean it and that would fix it. When I went to their digital cable the corrosion would cause total picture drop outs - with the little blocks and freeze frame like you describe. Again, a cleaning would fix it. From what I was told, the older system would work with a poor signal and give a poor picture, whereas the digital boxes are pretty much "all or nothing" - they drop the picture when the signal coming ... more >>

Hugh, the "all or nothing" digitizing you describe is a problem inherent with digital transmission, via cable or microwave. The tuner/receiver tends to retain and pixelate the last bit of useable signal received for that portion on the screen, waiting for the next bit of information. My guess is that the poster upgraded his TV, but doesn't have a good enough digital signal from the hub to support it - due to either faulty coax or just a bad connection. (tr)

Thank you. You know I had the same suspicions; that is was not JUST the "box". I went through something similar like this before when I bought my last TV. It turned out. or so they said, something was interfering with the signal with one of the cable wires going upstairs because it was not a COMCAST cable wire. BS. It was to. Anyway, yes I upgraded the TV just got a plasma, but nothing else has changed.

Now about billing. I don't think I should be billed for this since this is a COMCAST PROBLEM, I Pay them for their service which is often bad, and the first appointment I could get was in August!!!! How can I refuse to pay them.

I have Mediacom and the same problem, except, I was getting fuzzy and almost no sound through the static and also the blocks, freeze frame and no picture at all. Well they have checked my lines and the lines into the wall and the tv and they have changed my cable box twice and still the same problems. The catcher was that it wasn't all the time and it was the middle channels. They actually was standing in my living room today staring at the TV, shaking and scratching there head. They finally said that they were going to try another box. They ended up on the pole by the road and when he opened that box, water gushed out at him and soaked ... more >>

My complaint is how they conned us into keeping them hooked up for cable by sending us a shut off notice stating we had to only pay $25.96 by a certain date, which we paid promptly. Then, three weeks down the line, they state they are cutting us off if we don't pay two-hundred and something!

I called them and asked why they didn't tell us to pay more than the, initial, $25.96. She said that couldn't be. I told her, "Oh yes, and here is the shut off notice I received." And then I read it to her. She then tried to say it must have been a mistake. There is no way they would only charge that small amount on such a high bill. Then she tried to ... more >>
