Valid? - aol bill

Posted By: vulcan300 on 9/25/2006

I received a letter concerning a debt from AOL. Oddly enough I never received a bill from AOL on credit cards that I have, or letters from AOL about a bill. Have I signed up to AOL before? yes. Have I canceled the accounts? yes. Do I even use AOL? no. Does the claim NCO is making even my real name, not really; is Dave and David the same? OK, now lets get down to the letter. They offer a number to call 18663728498, when I do call; you know I am more than willing to hear them out to see how they came about in sending this claim but the number doesn't work it just beeps a million times. Should I even write them a letter to dispute the claim? Thanks in advance.

Since the number is no good, I'd wait for them to call you...then you can question what you need answers too...once you canceled your AOL account, did you sign back on for any reason at all, even to just check if it was canceled, because if you did, then you reactivated the account...that's how they get alot of people, once they cancel, they will check to see if it was canceled by signing on again..and of course it will allow you to sign on, and when you do, they claim you are still a member...I always tell people, once they cancel, delete AOL completely from their computer and delete the shortcut from your desktop...When I had AOL, sometime ... more >>

Hey basher thanks for the reply. Nope the issue here is any aol account signed up for was canceled immediately without any use. Is this claim even valid though? That was my general question. No letters from aol, no statements on credit cards. wrong first name; unless you consider dave and david to the same under your credit card. Mind also answering what is up with the fishy phone number?

Wait until they call you and then let us know, my freind. Don't give them any of your financial information - if it's not yours and you just pay them to go away - then that can hit your CBR.

I received the same letter from NCO for American Online. I also went to the site they have listed. I entered my # and the last four digits of my social. It came up saying that the social didnt match any records on file. I also called information to get a number that might work, but the operator said there is no listing for this company. I would say to ignore this letter. I think its a scam. I am also going to check with Better Business Bureau, I will let you all know what I come up with.

I wouldn't worry too much about it...if they gave you the wrong phone info, then it's not your fault for not getting in touch with them...but be sure to KEEP THAT LETTER...I think I have the number for the NCO that collects for AOL around here somewhere...but I'd just wait until you hear from them again.

I cant believe you gave them your social, from my point of view, If your not liable never give out important information. First thing I learned, first day at college; was to never give that out. Well before college I knew that but you know during college you did have to use it quite often. New practices and what not; schools can't now and hafta give out a ID number.

But besides that thanks for the replies. Good to hear.
