Fraud? - attempt to collect

Yesterday, I received 3 identical letters from NCO. Being that it was past their office hours, I could not call until this morning. The number on the letter did not produce any results. The ring tone was weird and then it just cut out.

I have not been an AOL subsriber in almost 7 years. I was the victim of credit card fraud though, so I'm wondering if this is what they're asking for. BUT, AOL always charges the month before, so why would they ever need to collect debt from someone?

This is striking me as very odd, as I've read two other reviews on this letter. Any advice, suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Ok...so this make 3 of the same complaint in two days...there is definately something going on with these AOL accounts ... Don't send them anything, I will do some research on it.

Thank you very much for researching this for me. I called that company again later this morning and to no avail. So, I called AOL and was transferred to their Fraud Department (800.307.7969). I spoke to a woman who said she will be sending out an unauthorised charge affidavit to me within 15 days. She assured me that all I would have to do is fill it out, return it and they will take care of the outstanding balance. This is really worrisome that this company would send these false letters out because there might be some people out there who just pay it to get it out of their hair when really, they should dispute it! BE AWARE!!

That's why sites like this one is important...people can post their concerns and experiences about a company and warn others...I'm still looking into that info...good luck.

Add me to the list of people who have received the collection letter from NCO on behalf of AOL. Like most of the people posting, I am not nor have I ever been an AOL customer. I was able to get right thru on their 866-372-8498 number, but the person I spoke with did not believe that I had not incurred the debt and suggested that I send them a written dispute. After finding my3cents, I called AOL's fraud number (800.307.7969 thanks to honeypunch) and spoke with Denise, who promised to snailmail me an affidavit which I will fill/sign/return. AOL will then use this affidavit to cancel the debt and they will notify NCO.

Here's hoping it clear... more >>

Add my name to the growing list! I received a letter from NCO Financial Systems Inc claiming that I owed AOL $95.60; this despite the fact that I haven't had an AOL account since 1997. I repeatedly tried the # listed on the NCO letter to speak to a representative, and got the weird dial tone with hang-up after 3 seconds every time. I'm so glad I found this site, b/c I called the AOL fraud line today (thanks honeypunch!!!!) and spoke with James at AOL who was incredibly helpful. He looked me up and found no AOL account and promised to mail me an unauthorized charge affidavit within 5-15 days. He also recommended to call back after 60 days... more >>

I wonder if these letters that are suddenly going out in regards to AOL has anything to do with the fact that AOL is located directly across the street from NCO in the Philippines...???...my inside source claims that the NCO in the Philippines haven't been doing very well and may be closing their doors...??? Just a thought.
