My 7-Hour Ordeal in Lax - 7-Hour Ordeal in LAX

I would like to register a complaint against United Airlines for what happened to me, and the way I was treated afterwards. Here is a detailed account of what happened.

On Sunday 9/17/06 I arrived at LAX shortly before 1:00PM for my 2:00PM flight, and after waiting in line at curbside, I was informed by the skycap that the deadline for checking in luggage passed while I was waiting in line.
I went in to try to check in at the desk, but I was forced to go "Standby" on the next flight at 3:00PM.

Little did I know that I would be a prisoner in the Twilight Zone for the next 7 -Yes! Seven- Hours shuffling between Gates only to be told repeatedly that due to the flights being oversold, I would have to wait for the next flight.
I had plenty of company. Apparently I was still Number 60 on the waiting list at 8:00PM (even though I had come in before 1:00PM) and United was unable to let more than 2 people go standby on any of the subsequent 6 flights and none on most. I counted about 20 people in the group going from Gate to Gate trying to get on.

Mind you, this was not a Holiday weekend, just an ordinary Sunday.

Finally, at 8:00PM, I stood in line at the customer service (There's an oxymoron if I ever heard one) and along with another passenger, demanded that my ticket be "pushed" to another Airline (Frontier in my case)

I had to go to another Terminal, fly on Frontier Airlines (who apparently do not oversell their flights as much as United does) because United employees kept telling me the chances of me geting on a United SF flight that night were slim to none. I live 70 Miles away from SFO, so I did not get home until 1:30AM, and had to go to work early the next morning.

I would not have gotten home that night had I not demanded to be sent on Frontier. No United employee even suggested it despite my repeated pleas for help getting home.

I have had numerous problems with airlines...especially lately. I ended up sleeping in a USO due to Southwest and their inability to take responsibility for their flights coming in 2 1/2 hours late so one cannot get their connecting flight. But that's another story.

However, you coming in only an hour early for your flight at LAX is ludicrous. Security alone can take 1/2 hour or more. You can get away with it at a small airport, but definitely not at a larger one. It took me about 15 min. to get through security at SFO recently and I was third in line. Avoid the headaches and get there at least two hours before your flight leaves.

You are right about United they not only oversell flights but they also think you owe them your life because of 9-11 as though they were the victims. There service was really bad before 9-11 and now it has gotten worse, if that is possible. But yes you need to get there at least 2 hours before your flight and I would never use curbside check in. Most airlines have a self-check in where you can walk up to a computer, put you credit card in and get checked in very quickly. Then there is the fact you were in CA, LAX. This is how the terrorist are winning. Better luck on your next flight

The days of the airlines running many flights per day between two cities, each at 60% of capacity is over. The airlines have had to reduce frequency and fill the planes to 80 or 90% of capacity in order to make money and survive. And yes, ALL airlines will overbook flights from time to time - they all use Revenue Management software that tells them that on any given flight, XX% of the passengers will be no-shows, so rather than leave with empty seats, they overbook flights - some worse than others, depending on what their historic data tells them. Most of the time it works fine, but occasionally people disobey the computer models and actua ... more >>

Since 9/11 they have been pretty clear abour arriving at the airport two hours before your flight. With all the baggage that now has to be processed through security machines, it is physically impossible to do it in under an hour.

In your case you were on standby becasue you were late for your flight not becasue United oversold your flight. You can't blame United. They did not oversell the flights you were on standby for, they were sold out and there was no room for standbys.

For all of you Monday morning quarterbacks: Hindsight is always 20/20. How would YOU have felt in my place? The fact remains that United aggressively oversold their flights on a REGULAR non-Holiday Sunday. Does anyone think it is appropriate to be made to wait Seven hours shuffling between gates without remedy before having to go on another airline who -Magically- did not oversell as aggressively as United?

You had two things working against you... Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and United Airlines - BOTH SUCK!!!

If I was in your place I would have been mad at myself for getting to the airport late and then be grateful that United offered to get me on the next available flight. You keep stating that they oversold their flights. How many people with tickets were bumped from those flights? Just becasue they don't have room on the flights for standby does not mean they oversold the flight.

    Shakra (09/30/2006)
I do not know of an airline that does not overbook their flights. They expect a certain percentage to not show. However, if you had been there to take your seat, you would have been on that plane.

if they bump you, the airlines can pay some$$ but again it would be in a certificate with restriction. you can also ask to be compensated for meals at the airport due to the missed flight. i know, it's not alot but heck make they pay...
