Why You Should NEVER Buy an Installed Water Heater from Home Depot - Installed Water Heater

Did you realize that if you have a problem with your Home Depot installed water heater, under the warranty, that you MUST return the water heater to the store before they give you a credit towards the new one? In addition, they DO NOT OFFER offer any installation service for the new replacement water heater nor any return service for the defective water heater.

They told me (same story all the way to corporate headquarters) that the customer is responsible for providing a contractor to do that. Thus, the customer without do-it-yourself knowledge must deal with a plumber to remove the old heater, return it to HD, and to get a replacement water heater. Estimates I have received for a special service like that exceed the cost of buying a new water heater imstalled from Sears.

Now then. with a policy like that, why would any one ever buy an installed water heater from Home Depot?

They probably are trying to prevent people from getting a refund or replacement without getting the old one returned...but if that's the case, I would think that if Home Depot installed it in your home and something went wrong with it under warranty THEY should send someone out to remove if and install a new one...it just doesn't make sense to tell a customer, once they get the money, that they are on their own which is basically what they told you.

Bob, from what you've stated, it reminds many of us again of the advantage of doing business with a local independent dealer. Many don't have the "do it yourself knowledge" as you stated and have to rely on additional sources, plumber etc. By the time we've added all those charges in we're in the hole, if you will.

Your question "why would anyone buy an installed water heater from Home Depot"? I think you answered it for all.

Is it possible yours could be fixed? Would the manufacturer send a service person at no cost to at least take a look and see if it can be fixed in place? Might be worth a call. Good luck.

What seems to be the problem with it.

The water heater leaks from the bottom on the tank. It is not fixable.

Why can't they have the same contractor they sent originally remove it and reinstall a new replacement? I can understand when it comes down to compensation where they may be disagreements on who pays him what, but it's not even getting to that point. Maybe to avoid the argument, that's exactly why they won't arrange for a sub to do the replacement. At this point, I refer back to Nohandle's post.

You do not say how old your water heater is. Knowing how most people try to screw retailers, your heater is probably years old and you think the retailer is responsible for taking care of defects, when in fact the manufactuer would be responsible if the item is still under warranty. Get a LIFE & a NEW Water Heater.
