Ford Motor Complaint - Rusty piece of junk - 2002 Ford F250 SuperDuty Diesel

2002 Ford F250 SuperDuty Diesel - Complaint
Review by EMTguy on 2007-01-22
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS -- I have a 2002 F-250 XL SD Supercab diesel (7.3L) with 56k miles on it. I bought the truck new and made my last payment on it this month. The truck is used periodically for work about 10-12k per year now and washed regularly. Would it have killed Ford to used some degree of corrosion protection in the steel. The finish on the rear bumper is peeling off, leaving rusty blotches that look like the truck is 15 years old, the oil pan is rusting thru, the underbody (frame, leaf springs, mounts, differentials) look like they've come from the hold of the Titanic and the door pinch seams (on the inside) are showing indications of corrosion as is the gray primered sheet metal under the bed and cab. For crying out loud, the rear half cab door strikers mounted on the rockers are also rusting away to nothing. They were so cheap and poorly engineered that they couldn't even paint the underside of the floors, rockers or bed in body color and from the looks of it, there is no corrosion protection in the primer as corrosion is forming on the primer. I can't imagine what this truck will look like in 5 years!!! It's a discrace. This is my last Ford vehicle. I've been a Ford guy my whole life and except forthe mistake of purchasing a piece of crap Dodge Ram 1500 new in 1996 (which needed a tranny at 18k), this is my 5th new Ford vehicle and will be my last. I specifically bought the diesel thinking this would be my last pickup I ever needed if I took care of it and I have so far. "Built Ford Tough" is nothing more than a marketing tag line. I believe their trucks are junk and they've screwed a whole generation of truck owners. The same people who gave them another chance when their 80s Ford trucks rotted away to nothing, just like the 80s Chevy/GMCs did. if you're paying attention Ford, THIS WILL BE MY LAST FORD VEHICLE!

You may want to check with your Ford dealer, not 100% on this, but I remember something about a recall on the oil pan for rust through. Other than that did you undercoat the vehicle??? Afterall you live in Boston and I would expect this from any manufacturers product sold in your area.

I'm siding with the reviewer on this. My brother and I both bought trucks in 1999. Mine, a Toyota 4-Runner... his was a Chevy Blazer. He had problems for years due to a bad paint job chipping/peeling off and causing premature rusting. My truck, now almost 8 years old, still does not have an ounce of rust on it or under it. I live in the salty midwest as well. Poor manufacturing/paint jobs and cheap unprotected parts can be to blame for the rusting problem.

I've got the same truck as the original poster, but I don't live in the salt belt. Mine still shines like new and there isn't an ounce of rust on it after well over 100K miles, so I have to go with JayD's take on this one.

I have salt all over my Chevy, it is eight years old and rust free.

I despise Fords because their engines are shoddy. Honestly, we went through five Fords in 6.5 years in England. We will never buy another Ford.

Shakra, HERE! HERE!, I agree 100%

Guys, Some of you are quick to blame the rustbelt, but you got to have the facts in my case before you do. The truck is rarely driven on the winter roads here. In fact, most of the corrosion occurred when it was sitting in my paved driveway for 2 years while I was travelling for work. The fact remains that I paid nearly $30k for a piece of crap IMHO. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that surface rust is forming on primer. Something's wrong here and Ford could give a flip. BTW, my buddy in NC has a 2001 E350 van with the same corrosion on the inside door seams. I've been told it's due to water infiltration behind the glued seam and lack of primer on the bare metal on the inside of the seam. Yup, the pinch seams are glued, not welded. Another Ford innovation putting "Quality Job 1"

FORD = Fix Or Repair Daily!

I'm in the same boat as EMTguy. I live in MA and have a 2000 F250 XLT "Superduty" diesel. My oil pan already rusted through, and I'm told it will be "well over $2000" to repair since they have to pull the motor to change it. (So EMTguy, if yours isn't leaking yet, have it treated and painted before it does!)

Blaming the salt ignores the fact that not all vehicles rust away like this. My wife's Audi looked brand new after 3 years in Vermont and then 4 years in Mass, and with more than twice the mileage of my F-250. Audi's aren't cheap to repair, but this car had _zero_ rust anywhere.

Ford issued a service advisory on the oil pan issue, but my dealer never mentioned it or acted on it. Though I did stop going to them 1.5 years ago after too many instances of shoddy work. A "new" brake caliper that leaked all over my driveway was the last straw. When I called about the oild pan, I was told "they all do that" and that they had 3 in the shop for replacement right then. Complaining to Ford did no good of course.

So I remain in the same position as EMTguy. I'll never buy another Ford. My 2005 Freestar and 2000 F250 will both be traded within the next year for a Toyota Sienna and and a Tundra. I try to buy American on everything, but I'm tired of my wallet taking a beating on Fords. I actually found this posting while looking for something to put in my "goodbye" complaint letter to Ford's customer (dis)service department.

Here is the latest TSB I could find on the oil pan issue. It is comical that they say "If the customer is concerned with this cosmetic issue..." as it is only cosmetic until the rust perforates the pan and dumps 3 gallons of oil on the pavement.

New 2006 SD 250 Diesel, 300 miles on it, dripping oil from what looks to be the rear seal. I assume this is not going to "break in" and correct itself, only going to get worse, also has a singing noise that has developed in the turbo charger. I traded in my 04 model with 34k on it due to excessive trips to the dealer (9) in two years, three were turbo charger issues, then wiring, window motor, rear window frame, engine dies at any speed, any time, no warning. Very dangerous!! Junk!

2001Ford F-250SD oil pan rust through. 9500 miles no rust any where no the truck and the oil has rusted through. Warrenty ? 100000 mile nope. 5years. who puts 20000 miles a year. Warrenty or not .Why are the oil pans rusting out?Maybe no reasonable amount of paint? Maybe cheap China steel? The dealer tells me their all rusting. Why has there been no recall? Because Ford dosent want to eat the costof repairs.Every owner of a power stroke with oil pan rust through should go file a law suit in their local court house aginst Ford. It's time for consumers to make companys stand behind the product they sell. Thanks

We have a 2002 F250 Diesel bought new, maintained very well and just noticed 2 weeks after the 5 year warrenty was up that both rear fender bed panels are rusting through from the inside out. Ford has offered to pay for half. Unacceptable in my book. No truck no matter what make it is should be rusting at only 5 years old.

I agree with you. FORD COMPLETELY SUCKS. I also live in Boston and I have a lawsuit against Ford right now. I started sueing them 2 years ago and hopefully it will be over soon. By the time I was 25, I bought 7 Lincolns and this is my last one FOREVER!! The Lincoln LS is a lemon and for those who live in Boston, do not go to Sentry Lincoln Mercury or Pride Lincoln Mercury. They will sell you car and then tell you to screw!!!

Owner of 2 superduties at the moment. driven in many other superduties. all in northern alberta canada. driven thru winter salt and calcium. NOT ONE truck rotted out as bad as yours, i keep mine clean most times but when working i dont have time to clean and that salt will sit on my truck for up to a week at a time. the only way i see your truck being this bad is if you live near the ocean and possibly unloading boats in it. in all honesty you are a poor truck owner if you let it get that bad. my 1st superduty was a 99 crew cab 4x4 long box dually. the worst it had was chips on my tailgate from rocks bouncing off trailer back to truck and around wheelwells where i had the chrome trim (trim rubbed thru paint). only other place that will rust is the bottom of the doors where the skin is folded over the shell. all are easy fixes IF you stay ontop of them. these trucks will last forever if taken care of.
