Target -- don't register there. - Gift Registration

Posted By: Cobbler on 5/7/2007

My son and daughter-in-law were expecting twins. They registered at Target. My daughter-in-law has a wide circle of relatives and friends so they received a lot of duplicates and a much more "newborn" size clothes than they could use.
The boys were born on March 30 and once they were settled at home, my son and DIL started going through the gifts.
My daughter-in-law started exchanging the (unwrapped) newborn sized clothes for larger sizes.
After two returns, she is now banned from returning any more items for a calendar year.

She tried to explain her problem and even had the twins with her to show the customer service (??) people.
She was told there are no exceptions to this rule.
If Target is trying to drive customers away, they're doing a great job.

Target's polciy is clearly posted. Gently pass the word around that Target is a less desireable place for your family to buy gifts for each other

Once again, another complaint that might have been avoided had gift receipts been given.
Apparently, this is a difficult concept to grasp for many people.

Ok, whenever I bought gifts for relatives, friends, who had done the registry thing, I always was given a printout by Target, so that I could see what was purchased, to avoid duplicates. Didn't anyone know she was registered at Target??

And Heaven, yup, so easy to give the gift receipt with the gift. It doesn't show what you paid, it's just a receipt of purchase that it was a gift.

Okay lets compare this situation with Sam's Club. My GF bought a pair of shorts that didn't fit. She lost the receipt. I took them back to Sam's Club and they exchanged it no PROB. They didn't get my name or do a computer entry.. They just swapped one for another. I don't understand these rigid rules if the merchandise is still sellable and currently stocked at the store. Where's the in the Biz common sense with these companies now days. I agree Cobbler, if there goal is drive away customer they are indeed doing a great job. Good Review!

this is to make up for the theifs among us - my sister works at Walmart adn they had a couple buy a new computer took it home exchanged out the tower for their old one and brought it back. walmart did not even check it! they couldve have had these people arrested adn they did nothing - so now the rest of us honest people pay the price as usual.

I remember the days when you got a baby gift and were happy and you used the gifts. Now a days it seems the expecting parents only want a few outfits and the rest the big ticket items. Your son and DIL will be suprised how many newborn outfits they will need for 2 babies.
I still can't figure out why people don't just give the gift receipts with the gifts. I tape it to the inside of the box.

This is something new. A woman complaing about not being able to return something to Target without a receipt. Move along, nothing to see here.

My daughter-in-law was only interested in directly exchanging obviously unused Target-brand clothing for larger sized clothing as the twins are already outgrowing the newborn size gifts.
The "nanny" comments notwithstanding, we are displeased with Target's policy and we intend to continue to express that displeasure.

Your guests new the policy when they purchased the items. Why did they not give them the receipts?

    imjustasteph (05/08/2007)
Why is everybody freaking out on the gift receipt thing? Obviously the poster did not buy and gift the items; therefore it is totally pointless to badger HER over the gift receipts.

WalMart is great for accepting returns though. Never had a problem. But again- you can't force someone else to buy from a specific store any more than you can force them to give a gift receipt. (PS- WalMart offers gift receipts but few cashiers know how to print them, and when ringing up a registry gift, I have seen cashiers look puzzled and throw the 'extra' receipt in the trash- maybe Target employees are similarly clueless?)

Now, I agree that the stif ... more >>

I agree, the poster, i.e. bride or mother to be of newborn can't expect all her guests to include gift receipts and can't expect targets or guest to remove duplicates, see my story below:
DO NOT open registry at targets, unless you know that all your guests are perfect at keeping their receipts, including gift receipts and making sure that they or the store clerk has removed it from the registry! You can’t be responsible for all your guests and the store clerk following through and w/o that receipt targets will make it impossible to return your duplicate items.
