Slapdash, nightmare tile installation - Tile Installation

We wanted to get some tile installed in our home, but the project turned into a nightmare.

First off, there was the sheer difficulty. HD had three parties involved -- the store, some clearinghouse in Florida, and a no-name local contractor. No one at HD acted as general contractor to coordinate these, so we had to do it ourselves.

HD delayed the job twice because this or that material hadn't shown up. We were also overcharged $300 for "excessive furniture charges," despite the fact that we had cleared the furniture off and only needed the contractors to move a washer and dryer. We also had to prep the molding ourselves.

When the crew did show up (two "guest workers" from a no-name commercial floor covering company), they made it clear they weren't going to do any more than the absolute minimum. Molding installation was shoddy and left lots of open joints that they could have corrected. Vinyl trim was slapped on any which way or left off entirely. The dryer vent was left wide open so the dryer blew lint into the air when we ran it. Toilet mount bolts were hacksawed off and not replaced and the cover caps broken and left for us to find. Joints are now permanently discolored. The "guest workers" left in a hurry before I could get home and attempt to get them to fix their latest batch of mistakes. (My wife was supervising; we didn't dare leave them alone in the house.)

After this experience, we will never use Home Depot repair services again and would not recommend them to anyone. We were planning on having them install carpet, but there is no chance of that now. Instead, we will try to find a local outfit that takes pride in their workmanship and stands behind it.

Take pictures, have an independent flooring installer provide supporting evidence, and go to the Home Depot you set scheduled this with and file a complaint.

Sorry to hear of your nightmare, it does not surprise me. If I want a new refridgerator I go to a reputable appliance store, tile..a tile store, paint, a paint store. i do not not like big box stores, I found them filthy & the service is usually terrible.

nivek1 is totally correct. if you want expert tile installation, go to a local flooring company, not a box store.
