Bass Pro Shop Complaint - Open on Thanksgiving - Open on Turkey Day

Open on Turkey Day - Complaint
Review by Justaguy on 2007-11-19
I've had it with retail stores opening on Thanksgiving! Bass Pro Shop is doing this! It will only be a matter of time when all stores do this and then business's too. Here in the USA we do not take as many Holidays as other companies. It would be nice to keep the ones we do have as non-working holidays. I suggest we boycott any retail outlet open on Thanksgiving!

Its ridiculous and promotes a break down to our culture.

I agree Steve, that this post is NOT helpful.

Im sure some people who fish will be happy the store is open,so then can get some bait,or a silly hat with a hook on it.

Sucks for the employees that don't want to work... but for many it is a good chance to earn some extra cash (holiday pay).
Posted by UrFriendlyPirate on 2007-11-19:
I'm going to reserve judgment here, for now.

What does it matter if the stores are open or not? I am not a big holiday person period. I hate when stores are closed and I need some "woman things" or milk. Since nothing is open I end up at the gas station and pay 5x what it would cost anywhere else.

Yeah, what GothicSmurf2 said!!! Also, after a day with the god-fam-damily I need at least a 12 pack or fifth of something. I'm not saying it's all bad spending time with my tribe, actually it's pretty nice until the ugliness sets in.. .Y'all know what I'm talking about. This is one day of the year I need services available to me.

Bah, Not sure why they shouldn't be open on Thanksgiving but I guess you can stay home if you don't want to support them.
If you all get by Springfield, MO you have to see the Bass Pro natural museum there. We took the kids there when my oldest was touring colleges and it was full of excellent exhibits and lots of animals. I am not an outdoor person but it was cool.

so, they are making you work on Thanksgiving....that's the retail business...it's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Posted by jktshff1 on 2007-11-19:

I was in actually three professions that just about totally assured I would be working on so-called holidays. I was a deputy sheriff for a rural department, and was triple-trained. In addition to being a trained peace officer, I was also a firefighter and an Emergency Medical Technician, as we were normally the first responders for whatever situation may arise. To me, a holiday is just another day of the week. I was raised in a state that had 'Blue laws," that made it illegal to conduct business on Sunday. When I got into my teens, the blue laws began to fall. Justaguy sounds like some of the bible thumpers who wanted to prevent the loss of the blue laws, except his is based on the downfall of our civilization. Sorry to have to tell you, Justaguy, my home state is doing just fine, and it is not consumed in a storm of Biblical fire. I think our civilization will survive the stores being open on holidays as well.

I am an RN and up until the last two years I worked every holiday. I was either there or on call. Will you be mad at hospitals as well for staying open on the holidays?

As Gordon Gekko states, "Money never sleeps!"
Posted by sarahnkrystal on 2007-11-19:
My mothers an RN and they work all the time, but she also makes about $75,000 a year more than I do (and I am a retail manager)For that much money I would work every holiday, including Christmas.
Stores should not be open every day of the year. We don't even have enough people applying to fill our staff, and we are overworked as is.

Please tell me what culture we are talking about?
Posted by jktshff1 on 2007-11-19:
stores being opened and having to work on holidays, I think
Posted by MRM on 2007-11-19:
This post applies to retail store, not hospitals or other emergency services.
Posted by Lidman on 2007-11-19:
So MRM does it apply to donut shops?
Posted by MRM on 2007-11-19:
Lidman, thats a good question. I would say a donut shop can open on Thanksgiving Day, but with limited hours.
Posted by chris513 on 2007-11-19:
awesome, they are going to be open on thanksgiving....i will have to head over there and check it out.....i love bass pro shop.
Posted by Principissa on 2007-11-19:
I know MRM I was just trying to make a point. Sometimes it's not fair and people have to work holidays. There are people who do not traditionally celebrate on Thanksgiving as some of us do. The only thing that isn't open here on Thanksgiving is Kroger. Even the movie theater is open.
Posted by Principissa on 2007-11-19:
MRM I meant to tell you, I made home made donuts the other day! I used black cherry jelly to fill them. They were delicious. If you promise to be good I'll make some for you.
Posted by MRM on 2007-11-19:
Mmmm... black cherry jelly donuts!
Posted by Principissa on 2007-11-19:
They were good! I coated them in powdered sugar!
Posted by Lidman on 2007-11-19:
No please! No powdered sugar!
Posted by Principissa on 2007-11-19:
Ok Liddy darling, no sugar for you. :)
Posted by Lidman on 2007-11-19:
Thank you Prin, I'm not supposed to have to much sugar.

Unfortunately our "culture" revolves around money. The employees who work on holidays usually get paid double time and I know of very few people in a position to turn that down. If you don't believe that retailers should be open on holidays then don't patronize them.
Posted by spiderman2 on 2007-11-19:
They wouldn't be open if people didn't shop.
Posted by justcuz3993 on 2007-11-19:
This post is ridiculous. If you don't like it, don't go in. While you're at it, be sure that you boycott all the businesses that already stay open on holidays.
Posted by Justaguy on 2007-11-20:
Ah, to clear up some issues. No, I'm not a bible thumper! Yes, I work in a field that requires me to work on Holidays. The Computer support area. I just wanted to say, plan a little and keep your holidays... American business will ensure you work as much as possible. Soon all folks will be required to be available on any day the business they work for needs them. But, it is our choice. Thanks for responses, I thought this was a no brainer, but I was wrong shop on people.... we Americans do this so well.
Posted by Lidman on 2007-11-20:
Justaguy, thanks for clearing that up and your feedback is great. Now I understand what you mean and I agree. We should have Holidays like they do in Germany then maybe we would not be such an up-tight country. But with more time on our hands we might see how the Government and big business are screwing us over?
Posted by Justaguy on 2007-11-20:
I was unclear in my original post. You good people have pointed that out. I hope my motives are clearer now. Its just we give so much of our time to our chosen fields of work. Occasionaly, we deserve a collective country(US) break. Sincerely, Justaguy.
Posted by jktshff1 on 2007-11-20:
Well, we as a nation cannot have any holiday without offending someone. That's what it is coming to.
Posted by Principissa on 2007-11-20:
I agree jk. No matter what anyone does or says someone will get offended. Maybe even offended to what I'm typing right now.

My wife runs a craft store we own and I thought she was nuts opening it this year on Thanksgiving evening. She told me earlier that indications look from the buzz that the place will be absolutely mobbed.
Posted by dealerdirect on 2007-11-20:
The best retail sales day of the year is New Year's Day, followed by black friday, Thanksgiving and labor day.
