Farmers Automobile Insurance Assn Complaint - Extending policy without approval then demanding payment - Insurance Policy

Insurance Policy - Complaint
Review by nebulung on 2007-12-21
NOGALES, ARIZONA -- We chose to go with another insurance company after 6 months the policy with company was raised again for a total of $100.00 in a year. There were no accidents or tickets on this car or driver (my husband only at the time,) a perfectly clean record. My husband was refused time with the agent to discuss this matter back in October. Clearly, our agent was doing quite well and didn't need our business. We did not send payments or any indication at all we wished any extension on the policy. In fact, we even got a notice saying if we wanted our policy reactivated, we had to pay more money to have it "reactivated," indicated that the coverage had ended.

Yesterday, December 20th, we received a notice stating that we were going to be sent to collections if we did not pay for policy extension from the end of the six months (October 18) to November 13, not even 1 month. This extension was not authorized in anyway nor, according to their own letters, were we covered. We had other insurance anyway. We had to provide them "proof" of coverage to have this charge dropped. My husband went to the branch today and requested they provide proof to him that he authorized this extended coverage. He was told they couldn't help him and that he had to come in with proof of coverage before anything could be done. Our coverage with another company isn't their business!

I do realize that printing off cards of proof is easy enough but we are subject to more run-around from this company if they are willing to go this far. There is also the principle of charging people for services not rendered as well. If we are incorrect on our observations, please let us know as neither one of us had this situation happen to us before. (I have switched insurance companies before and nothing like this has occurred.) We'd also take any advice.

Why did you not call the Farmers Agent and tell him/her you were canceling the insurance.
It's that simple.

Thanks Jay D for your insight, I asked my husband about that last night after reading your post and he said the policy expired on the 18th so it wasn't just not sending in payment and that's it. It was an expired policy and non-renewal. Guess I'll send him in with the payment cards for the other place.

JayD, although I'm in agreement with your posts 99% of the time, I guess this is the 1% I'm not. Couple of years ago I switched auto insurers. New insurance effective same date as expiration of old one. I didn't notify the old company. (New company wasn't even aware of who I was with previously.) They sent me a couple of letters stating coverage would by canceled. Of course, maybe this varies from state to state, but here in MI I wasn't threatened with owing the old company money. We don't sign contracts for automatic renwal so how can they claim we owe them money?

where you paying every 6 months or monthly?

Most policies auto renew and by law they have to give you X days for the policy to be extended (for non payment) before they can cancel. You did have insurance during those days. If you want to cancel, you have to tell them. If you decide to just not pay, you will be covered for those extra days and will have to pay. EVEN if you did have insurance via another company. They MIGHT be nice and take those cards and call it a wash.

The very same thing happened to me with my Farmers Insurance policy. I obtained insurance from another company, paying the premium. Then received notices from Farmers that I owed them for their policy - it took over a year to straighten the situation out. I contacted the attorney general for my state and got the state insurance person involved. Meantime, Farmers had sent my name to a collection agency - all because I didn't notify them - when you're working 12 hr. shifts, and working 7 days a week, holding down 2 - 3 jobs! A person doesn't have time to make alot of telephone calls to cancel policies that they don't want and didn't request.
