Baker College of Auburn Hills - Complaint
Review by rjw on 2008-02-07
AUBURN HILLS, MICHIGAN -- I have attended Baker College of Auburn Hills for almost 5 years, just trying to obtain my Bachelors degree. I do have to say that they've had some amazing instructors and I wish them the best. However, Baker College is a scam and a joke. They advertise affordable tuition and classes that fit the working adults schedule. HA!!! Those are lies. The financial aid advisors are uneducated about student problems. They are improperly trained and the head of the department condones this! When it comes to class availability that doesn't happen. I had 5 classes left including and internship and they weren't offering them at all except during fall quarter when they offered all 5 on the same night. I was told that I should have scheduled better and there was nothing they would do. I spoke to the Dean and he told me there were 3500 other students they were worried about and I was not one of them.

I registered a complaint with the BBB and Baker told them there was nothing they could do for me. I should have taken the classes when they were offered. It's hard to take 5 classes in one night! I was told I would have to travel to a different campus that was 45 minutes away if I wanted to graduate. I was finally able to get 2 of my classes that I need after much stress and frustration. I was recently sick with the flu and could not make it to the class. The assignment was stated in the sylabus as worth 10 points. I figured that it wouldn't hurt my grade too much to miss it or hopefully should would work with me on doing something to make it up. She emailed me 12hours after I sent the email and 2 hours after the class started saying that the assignment was worth 100 points and not 10. It was going to drop my grade significantly and that I should be advised. I will say that this class was an independent study because no one else, at this time, was able to take this class. This school dishes out threats, false advertisments, and poorly trained staff.

Please beware that you will not get a good education here. You will be too busy trying to get what you're paying for!

I guess if you really wanted to graduate, you should have traveled the 45 minutes to the other location - rather than whine about it on a website.

Since it usually takes four years to attain a bachelor's degree going to school full time, what's unusual about an adult(?) taking more than five years going part time? Of course, when you began at Baker you were in frequent contact with your counselor, weren't you? If the financial aid department personnel were so inept in their suggestions, why don't you do this on your own?

Baker has a good reputation. I was pleased with the performance of a couple part-timers I once had on my payroll. Wish I could have afforded them full time. I know someone who lives in Berkley who drove to the Flint campus of UM three nights a week to get the final requirements for her degree. If you're really serious about it, 45 minutes is a cake-walk.

Guess the snow in Auburn Hills yesterday kept you away from both school and your job, right? I see you were quite busy on this board. It was bad in Troy, too.

'Please beware that you will not get a good education here. You will be too busy trying to get what you're paying for!' I'll agree with one thing: The education received at Baker must not be very good because that comment makes absolutely no sense. Maybe Subway will rehire you.

While it is unfortunate that the staff treated you as they did, it is up to you as the student to schedule your classes efficiently. I learned this at a community college working on my Associate's degree and will never make that mistake again. It is not the college's fault that you failed to plan your schedule according to when the college offers the classes.

Baker College is an excellent school, in fact I will go as far as to say it is one of the best in Michigan. They have online classes, they are affordable and you will get a high quality education. Scorned students need to not try to discourage others from attending because it is definitely a very good school. I graduated from Baker, and before going I went to Ferris and Oakland, believe it or not Baker has MORE to offer and they are much more affordable.

You've got to be kidding me. You (for whatever reason) missed classes and did not schedule properly and its the college's fault? So much for personal responsibility.

I had a hard time with Baker too. Their career services is a joke. They took months to find me an externship and then messed up my financial aid. Go to Ross instead. The stated "available graduates" that are employed include only those that fill out their alumni reports. Many fed up graduates don't bother. Beware.
