My granddaughter, a college student, wanted to buy a car from Parks Chevrolet. I agreed to co-sign her note, saying that I would be financially responsible if she failed to make payments. She called and said I would have to come in and give permission in person for them to do a credit check. I had unexpected company and was in a rush, which the salesman knew, and he kept giving me forms to sign.

I should never have signed them, but I did. My mistake. Anyway, her mother came and the two of them decided on the car. The mother called and told me the car would have to be put on my insurance policy. I knew this was a lie, because my son had just bought a car for his daughter. He co-signed the loan, but the car is in her name. She is a college student also. I refused, and surprise, surprise, they decided she could have an insurance policy in her name. When I went to the business office for them to complete the paperwork, close to the end of the workday, I found they had put the car in both my name and her name. This was never meant to be done, and they knew it. They said, "We had to do it this way." I know that is not true.

My other granddaughter's car is in her name alone--same circumstances, except her father cosigned. I firmly believe they thought they could (and they did) take advantage of a 70-year old woman and her teenage granddaughter.

That sounds shady. Why wouldn't her parents sign for the car? It sounds as if the parents and the teenager pulled the wool over your eyes.

Yes dear, you were taken advantaged of but I'm afraid the dealership was the least of it. Good luck!

I gotta agree with GS. Since you were not there during the actual sales process I wonder what daughter/grand daughter agreed to on your behalf

It's unfortunate but I agree with everyone else. Chalk this up to a lesson learned and never sign or agree to anything unless you are present during the actual sales process.

As the others have stated plus being in a hurry is no excuse for not reading what you are about to sign. If you can't read over the paperwork then, take it home to read, sign and return. If the deal is good today it will be just as good tomorrow. Sounds like your granddaughter screwed you over.

In cases where the credit is non-existent or below what the bank requires, they bank will require you (or someone with a solid credit history) to be a co-buyer, not a co-signer...which means you are on the title making it possible to use your insurance as well...You are correct, as a co-signer on the loan, your name is attatched to the loan only...This was probably a requirement of the deal--and granddaughter probably "forgot" to tell you this. I would not blame the dealer...

    Dear Maam,
The fact is the dealership did nothing wrong. The fact that they insisted on you coming in personally to sign the credit application means they were respecting your rights. They made sure that the person cosigning was actually you in order to stop any possible identity theft. Your personal information is very important and Parks Chevrolet made sure it was not being stolen or used without your consent. Second, different banks have different requirements. Most require that the cosigner's name always be on the actual title. The registration however only requires one name. Some banks, and I mean only some will allow one name on a ... more >>

I also had problems with Parks Chevrolet! I went to buy a used vehicle, was going to spend quite a bit of money! They lost my business! They were going to sell me a $17,000 vehicle with dry-rotted tires. They didn't want to give me free tires...so they added the price of tires to my loan! Well I agreed, like a dummy to buy the vehicle. I told them I would be back the following Monday to pick it up after it got a wash, new tires, and a tune up since the garage was closed on that Saturday. I was approved for the loan and told them I would pick it up after work. Well, 2 hours before leaving work, I call to see if it's ready for me to ... more >>
