Wedding Registry

I am recently married and had registered at Target, for the things that I couldn't find at macy's. My sister was recently married and had actually warned me against using Target's registry, and I now wish I had listened. We received a nice, fairly expensive sewing machine that I had registered for. After finally deciding that I was going to keep it, I believe I tossed the receipt and put the machine in the corner without opening it.

I go to open it now, a few months after the wedding, and there is a whole part missing from the machine, the part that held all the little pieces. Someone had obviously bought and returned it after taking that piece, and now that I have no recepit Target will not do a thing about it. I walked out of the store with tears.

I came home and looked again for the receipt, and will be going back tomorrow to cancel my Target credit card (I used to be a frequent shopper) and will not be shopping there again until they become more customer oriented.

That really sucks. Although, I do see Target's point here, keep the receipts. Most especially since it's for a wedding gift, even after your sister warned you about the return policy. You know about it, you knew you were going to have a hard time without it.

Regardless, try contacting the manufacturer to see if they can send you the missing part as it was not in the box when you purchased it. They may, or may not send you that part.

Long gone are the days any retailer would blindly accept returns/exchanges. Even Walmart is getting more strict with their return policies.

    Good luck.

Why did you throw out the receipt? If you shop at Target a lot you should have known that it would be required to return the sewing machine. I don't know what brand of machine that you have, but if you call the manufacturer of the machine they will send you the missing parts. My new machine was missing the zipper foot that was supposed to come with it and all I did was call Brother and give them the model number. I had the zipper foot in about a week. You shouldn't stop shopping there just because they won't let you return/exchange something without the receipt. These days more and more retailers are actually requiring that little piece of pa ... more >>

While I generally agree that Target's policies are unreasonable, I must side with them on this one. Even if you kept the receipt, you waited months to open it up and that is too long to expect Target to help you. At this point, they would have to assume that you lost the part. It is unfortunate that this happened, but I think you should accept some responsibility for waiting and now try to get the part from the manufacturer. Good Luck to you - I hope it works out. Congrats and Blessings on your new marriage!

First of all thanks for posting your complaint. So few people take the time to complain about Target's return policy. Target stinks with nothing but contempt for their customers. I don't shop there. Why would I? They sell crappy merchandise and they have crappy customer service and their prices are now lower than wal-mart, kohls or jc pennys. Smart people avoid Target... you should too.

    Great advice trumania!

It amazes me what people now register for. Back in my day you registered for dishes, towels, glasses, china, silverware, things you NEED to set up house.

Try calling the manufacturer to see if you can get the part from them. You might have to pay for it, but I have to side with Target on this one. You stated you threw out the receipt and then opened the gift.

You throw the receipt away, don't open the machine for a couple of months after receiving it, and somehow this is all Target's fault?
And exactly where does your responsibility come into play?

yoke, I think wedding registries are changing because people are getting married later in life now. By the time a lot of people decide to marry, they already have the basics (dishes, glassware, etc.) for setting up a household.

As for the original complaint, I agree with almost everyone else. It's your responsibility not to leave a relatively expensive item in the box in a corner for a few months only to find out later there's a problem.

Easy fix... go into Target and buy another machine. Now you have a receipt. Go out to the parking lot, get the defective item and bring it in with your receipt and get a refund.

    thensider (02/26/2008)
ken, that kind of tactic is the exact reason that retailers have such strict policies these days.

I know exactly where you are coming from! I was married 2/28/2008 and had the same horrific treatment from Target. I REFUSE to shop there anymore-and all these people with their defense of Target-just wait until they misplace a receipt or cant make a return-they will be the first ones posting an angry story! Target is awful.
