I was finally able to cancel my
service to
AOL yesterday. YES!!!! My wife and I were tired of their endless advertising, the pop-ups and the disconnects. Not to mention, the two times our account fell into the hands of spammers.
The
cancellation process was long, not friednly, and took being connected, transfered and disconnected to 8 different
AOL service representatives.
In each case I was requested to provide my name, my address, a night time phone number, my login password, an answer to a security question and the last four digits to my credit card. I find this somewhat ironic, since they mention in the dialogue that the phone calls are recorded. My conversations would start with service representative in the cancellation department and I would clearly state that I wanted to cancel my service. Later in the conversation they would ask me to hold and then send me to a technical service rep. who would ask me if I was having technical problems. I would then ask to be transfered back to the appropriate AOL representatives to cancel the service. Then I would be disconnected. I got hung up on once by the 5th AOL representative because I asked her to promise to not transfer me. Too much to ask I guess.
My wife and I fell for the free trial service. However, I realize that they really don't want our long term business, they offer these "free" services so that they can verify bodies or subscription counts to advertisers. This is a way for AOL to justify charging ad rates. I am so glad to be rid of them!
