Cancelling in AO - Hell - internet service - cancelling

I was finally able to cancel my service to AOL yesterday. YES!!!! My wife and I were tired of their endless advertising, the pop-ups and the disconnects. Not to mention, the two times our account fell into the hands of spammers.

The cancellation process was long, not friednly, and took being connected, transfered and disconnected to 8 different AOL service representatives.

In each case I was requested to provide my name, my address, a night time phone number, my login password, an answer to a security question and the last four digits to my credit card. I find this somewhat ironic, since they mention in the dialogue that the phone calls are recorded. My conversations would start with service representative in the cancellation department and I would clearly state that I wanted to cancel my service. Later in the conversation they would ask me to hold and then send me to a technical service rep. who would ask me if I was having technical problems. I would then ask to be transfered back to the appropriate AOL representatives to cancel the service. Then I would be disconnected. I got hung up on once by the 5th AOL representative because I asked her to promise to not transfer me. Too much to ask I guess.
My wife and I fell for the free trial service. However, I realize that they really don't want our long term business, they offer these "free" services so that they can verify bodies or subscription counts to advertisers. This is a way for AOL to justify charging ad rates. I am so glad to be rid of them!

I had the same problem, I finally just cancelled my credit card, closed my checking account, and lo and behold, they finally took the hint. I fell for the free month too, I wish I never did. I paid for the remaining balance with a money order, just so they wouldn't ask me to come back. I use the free disks they send me as coasters. Just put some cork on the back, they work great!

They did the same thing to me with the free trial offer. When the trial was up, I called and told them to cancel me because the service was poor. They told me I needed to mail them a letter with a bunch of information, which I did. To my suprise, they billed me anyways. I sent another letter demanding they cancel the bill and close my account. Instead, they sent yet another bill. After three certified return receipt letters, they finally canceled me. Then they demanded 3 months worth of payments. What they hell is up with this company???

Same here, you absolutly can not cancel their service without a fight. They have special trained CSR's ready to do battle with you when you call to end service. I've had it twice and will never use them agian- simply because I know what happens if I want out.

Same thing here!! I took advantage of my "free" month with A.O.Hell and then cancelled. Their operative assured me that my account was cancelled and I had no more worries, slow service, endless pop-ups etc. Loe and behold I was then charged for the following 2 months and it took endless phone calls to actually get rid of them.
