Terrible Gas Consumption of 2006 Honda Civic EX - 2006 Honda Civic EX with several factory defects

Posted By: Volkan on 5/1/2008

Location: New York, NY

I am getting 29 mpg (no a/c, closed windows, only 2 adults with total weight of 280 ib, trunk empty, proper tire pressure, no aggressive driving/acceleration, no hills)

When I spoke with Honda Motor Corporation representative about my concerns, he stated the following about the FACTS OF HONDA CIVIC gas consumption.

It is a fact that the car would never get the mileages printed on the sticker that the car came with and it was misleading the public.

This misleading is the fault of the U.S. Government, not Honda Motors.

The actual gas consumption was 15-25% worse that what Honda presented during the sale of this vehicle.

He claimed that even a 20-lb of suitcase would make a dramatic change on the Honda Civic's gas consumption. He stated that this suitcase would be the culprit for obtaining worse than expected gas mileage consumption.

I find this and other similar and ridiculous explanations of the horrible gas consumption of my 2006 Honda Civic part of the cover up of the public misleading and perjury by Honda Motors.

You have obviously never seen or heard the expression "your milage may vary".

The only use the numbers printed on the sticker are useful for is comparing model to model.

I thought it was common knowledge that the EPA mileage figures prior to 2008 models were for comparison purposes only - they aren't meant to and don't reflect real life driving.

The idea is that you can use them to compare one car against another, not that you can expect those figures in the real world. They are achieved under ideal conditions in a lab, not on the streets.

Starting with 2008 models, the figures are supposed to be more reflective of the real world - faster acceleration, use of the A/C, etc. But the EPA still cautions these are for comparison use only.

So you can calm down, there is no systematic "public misleading ... more >>

29 m/g sounds reasonable to me.

I looked at Consumer Reports and this model had an overall mileage rating of 29 mpg. Sounds like you are right on the spot. Ridiculous accusation against a suitcase though. Just plain stupid if you ask me.

What did Honda claim would be your expected gas mileage when you purchased the vehicle that leads you to accuse them of perjury?

Perjury? Better look in the dictionary. The word is probably right between bait and switch.

First of all, Honda never claimed squat!!! Gas mileage estimations are done solely by the EPA not the manufacturer (notice the big letters "EPA" printed on the window sticker). Honda has zero control of these estimates, they are mandated by the federal government.
