a friend of mine brought me subway yesterday. I was told there were no tomatoes on the sandwich because of some kinda bad batch or something like that. at least that is the info that we got from subway...i should really read this article so i can find out the whole story. VH!
Thanks, jenjenn, for the informative link. I think this type of foodborne infection is more common than we know. Salmonella isn't the only culprit...hepatitis A is also fecal-orally transmitted. Nor is the risk confined to imported veggies. Domestic field workers frequently defecate on the 'run' while picking (time in the outhouse is time away from the picking quota). The hand that picked the tomato for your salad probably wiped the butt of the person who picked it. Wash ALL fresh veggies carefully!!!
I work for a food service company, and we too have pulled fresh tomato products as a precaution. This is due to the rash of salmonellosis cases which have been traced to tomatoes in several states.
It's unfortunate the staff the restaurant could not properly explain the issue at hand.
You can search google news for many stories about this issue.
Tomatoes are being pulled off shelves of supermarkets as well as restaurants...now there are almost 20 states involved with the salmonella outbreak...I can do without the tomatoes until it's safe to eat them again.
