A guy shows up on my porch and rings doorbell. I asked him "How can I help you and who are you representing?" He stated he is representing the Local Police Department and to please step out of the house. I said again "Who are you representing?" He said the Police Department and I need you to step out of the house.

He kept flashing some badge as he would say who he's representing. I did finally step out because I had other family members home and he asked to me step out to the city sidewalk and asked me if I had any new neighbors on the block. I said "yes" but did not point out where.

He asked me several other questions that I thought was suspicious that I did not answer directly. Then he asked me do I see the signs on the block? I said no and what is this about. He then pointed to an ADT security sign in my neighbors yard and that's when I looked at his shirt that said "Honeywell" and his badge that said "APX" on it and I then told him that this is a bunch of crap. This is a sales technique and that he should not be falsely representing that he is with the local Police department. I told him I already have a home security system and to please leave my property. He then said "Maam, I need to check your old security system. Let me in your residence to check your system."

Reminding me again that he is with the local Police Department. I told him No! I do not know who you are and he then said "I don't know you either Maam". My son, then heard how loud, and belligerent the guy was getting, so my son told him to get off our property right now. My mom said she does not know you and does not want your product. He told my son, I don't know you either and I was talking to your mom. I then locked the door immediately. The Honeywell sales guy once again said I am with the local Police Dept, please open the door and at least take my brochure.

Well that's a new twist on an old sales scam. Call Honeywell too and let them know how one of their dealers is acting out on the street. Your Son should have drilled the idiot in the head when he was on your property.

Um yeah, well what would have really done some good would have been to get his personal card so you could report a name to police and the company, and not just "some sales guy." I wouldn't have opened the door in the first place and directed the person to the sign on my door that says "no solicitors." Law enforcement HAS to show you a badge ID, anything short of that, close the door in his face!

Yes, I believe there are some cold-callers out there who will try any approach to make a sale. But I have a question for the poster: Why in the world did you engage him in conversation for so long? I'd have slammed the door on the idiot after his second question--and then kept an eye on him through either the peep hole or behind the blinds. If he made approaches to any other houses, I'd have quickly dialed 911.

locally, the police tell us if anyone shows up siuch as this, and claims to be police, if any doubt, call 911. they then can verify the facts. we are told, if htis is the real police department, they will wait until all verifivastion has been done.

I can assure you...he was not with the police department and he was NOT with Honeywell...if you would have left him in, you would have been robbed! He's casing your neighborhood...sometimes they get the woman to step outside and another person will slip into their house while you are being distracted. NEVER step outside your house for anyone.

This happened in our area a few weeks ago. An elderly man was outside working in his garden when a guy with a uniform from the water company approached him. He asked the man if he was having trouble with his water pressure, the man did not really understand English very well, he was Ukranian or somet ... more >>

To add to DB's post, I signed up for weekly email crime reports from our local police department. Every so often there's a warning that some jerk like this is roaming around, people should be aware of them, and to call the police if they come aknockin'.

Alot of people are easily fooled into thinking if they have the uniform, they must be legit...not true...go to any of your local Goodwill stores and you can buy all kinds of uniforms from various companies...Ours was even selling Mail Carrier uniform clothing at one time...that's all a crook would need...it's like a free ticket into someone's home. I have always felt strongly against these Goodwill type places selling uniforms.

"You can either leave now or I'll call my friend, Sam Sam was born in 1911. He has a 45 waist."

You did the right thing here

The minute I knew that this bloke was not an actual police officer after representing himself as one I would have gone in the house and called 911. I would not have engaged him in any conversation. If he is with the police let him call for back up in a marked police vehicle... then we can chat.

I would have let him know that I needed to verify that he was with the police department and I will call 911. This person was casing the neighborhood.
