engine problems/poor service

I bought a 2003 Ford Escape 9 months ago. Last week, the engine blew after 14,991.
The dealership tells me my warrenty is void due to lack of maintnance on my part b/c of a missed oil change. They told me the reason the engine blew on this new car is b/c of sludge buildup and the cost to repair - 5k!

The dealership didn't want to help us and we have yet to have any luck with Ford Customer Service.

EDIT:: I found out what the problem was from another service center..

I had spun a main rod bearing. I called the dealership to ask them exactly what was wrong with the Escape and they never got back to me, on my service printout it says "engine blown due to oil sludge"
In fact, I don't think they ever really checked the engine all that well or they would have told me it was a bearing.
Second of all, when I first took the car into the dealership, they told me I needed an entire new engine.
I have been informed that these engines have oil problems but Ford didn't want to help me with the problem any. In fact, they won't return any of my phone calls!
So in the end.. I have to void my warrenty with Ford b/c I can't get the engine fixed at the service center (costs wayyyy to much) I end up paying 2,400 for parts and labor, and the stress and headaches this has caused. Everyone I talked to is shocked that a rod bearing would break at 14k but their isn't a darn thing I can do about it.

Rod and Main bearings are an internal lubricated part of the engine. When the dealer recommended replacing the engine it was probably because the cost to rebuid the engine was greater than to replace not to mention if there is a sludge problem from lack of maint. it is only a matter of time before another internal componet fails. I have to ask how many oil changes have you had in 15,000 miles? If you say none then the fault lays directly on you shoulders and not Fords

You are so right when you say that diagnosis of problems occurs after warranty - until that time "cannot duplicate" keeps then from addressing most problems while they have a chance to escalate into bigger ones - Great Company Hey...
