Take The Easy Way Out - Bogus Debt Collections

I found this site when NCO called me looking for someone I never heard of. The guy kept giving me bits of info about his "target", but I had the feeling he wanted me to give back info about myself to prove I didn't know the man.

These guys obviously fight dirty, so fight smart instead. When they tell you they are recording the call, tell them "That's fine with me.

Give me just a second and I'll set up my recorder too." Then if you don't already have a recorder, get one before the next time you talk to them.

Gather your proof of payment or other info and take it to the credit reporting agency instead of to them. Detail the debt, any settlement agreements and the prof of payments and then demand that the reporting agency add it to your account and take the debt off.

It is illegal for them to call your relatives and give them information about your debts. Report them immediately if they do this. If they continue to call after being told not to, this is also reportable.

Finally, let's all write to our legislators and ask that this behavior be tagged for what it is-- extortion. Anyone who holds up your credit for a bogus debt should be charged with extortion in criminal court, not just sued in small claims. This includes the owners, executives and phone handlers. Anyone who participates in anyway.

NCO wants the title "Kings of the Bottom Feeders", they work hard every day at the title.

NCO will not (or that is what the person from NCO told me) let you tape the call. They are allowed to but you can not. When we kept getting phone calls for someone we did not know and we had to prove that we were not them I told the girl I was going to record and she told me I was not allowed. I wish all the employees at NCO were like DB.

If they say they are recording the call that also implies they give permission that will apply to you as well. Just be sure you record their statement saying they are/may record the call. You do not have to prove you are not the person they are after, they must prove you are. Yes, they do try to make you believe otherwise.

In many states, you can record a call whether or not the other party gives consent. In others, CALLERS to your number may be recorded at the discretion of the party CALLED. In other states, BOTH parties must consent. Look up the info as it applies to your state.

For your own protection you should assume the telephone recording laws of the most restrictive state. As I previously stated if the other party states the call may be recorded that means they have consented for you to record as well.

what a good way to get rid of them, when they say you are being recorded, say back, "and i am recording you". i have hear of people doing this, and once it is said, the caller hangs up!

    very helpful.
