American Express Complaint - American Express Doesn't Stand For My America - Amex Credit Card

Amex Credit Card - Complaint
Review by awesmacked on 2009-02-19
PHOENIX, ARIZONA -- I have been a loyal customer for 15 years with AMEX. Over the years they greatly increased my credit limit without me even requesting it. I pay my entire balance every month on time regardless of it being $5 or $15,000. Then all of a sudden my credit limit was drastically decreased without warning. When I made an inquiry they said they had the right to do whatever they chose. I have an excellent credit rating so I was totally confused. Then after three more months of me using the card and paying in full on time they discontinued my card! When I called to inquire about this and my vast amount of accrued rewards points they again said they can do what they want and my rewards points balanced was "flipped" which meant cancelled. So they not only cancelled a loyal client with excellent credit but they stole my rewards points. After many many hours on hold and days tracking down someone to help me I am forced to accept this situation!

How can they get away with this behavior and be so unrelenting and rude in the process. I also have grave reservations about their economic control...how can we living in a democracy be told by COSTCO that the only card they will accept is AMEX. We as citizens have been asleep too long and have let Big Business control the reigns. It does not bode well for our economic recovery.

Well, as to your comment about Costco...they are a private, membership store. As such, they can make the rules as the see fit, assuming those rules are not illegal. If Costco says "that the only card they will accept is AMEX", then that's the only card they accept. They could say they only accept Rubbles or Lira or belly-button lint....it's their company and they make the rules. And, since you paid to be a memeber, you agreed to those rules. It may suck, but that's the way it works.

Judging by the complaints on this site, AM EX is apparently doing this to any and everybody. I'm guessing they are in dire straits for cash and trying to limit their exposure. I think what some of these banks fail to realize is there are 2 very important things in this life that you just don't mess with, peoples kids and peoples money. I believe that when this "crisis" in the economy is over, the banks are going to find out that all those customers that they put the screws to have very long memories..Sorry for your troubles..

Awesmacked you are a new member and welcome aboard. Obviously you haven't read the complaints on AmEx that really started getting heated about a year ago. Many members at the time didn't really comprehend what was going on when a complaint was posted. You stated you paid your bill in full each month regardless of the balance and now find yourself with a card no longer valid, compliments of AmEx and your accrued points tossed into the ozone. Thank you for a reminder of what others can expect.
