Crappy Customer Service

I just recently purchased a desktop from Dell and when I received it, it didn't have Windows installed, it had Ubuntu. I contacted customer service and let them know what had happened. In not as many words they pretty much said too bad so sad they couldn't do anything about it. I then asked to talk to a supervisor and he actually said that it would be a waste of my time, he wouldn't be able to help me either, which was exactly what he said.

My problem was that I had purchased the Inspiron 530 and on the website it said that it came with the system Windows Vista. Now I know you build your own computer but the only thing I changed was the amount of memory. How the actual system was changed is beyond me. When I was on the phone with them I let them know that the website said the operating system was Windows Vista, not Ubuntu.

I don't even know anything about that system. Now I have to pay a 15% restocking fee just to send it back and got no help what so ever! I will never do business with them again and I reported them to the BBB!!

Did you place your order online? If so, did you keep a copy of your order request? It should itemize exactly what you requested on the computer. If you placed the order via phone I do not know what you could do to dispute the incorrect order. You need to have everything in writing these days.

They did this to someone before and refused to fix the problem, it took the media to get a resolution. You may have to do the same.

You should not have to pay a restocking fee for their error.

I thought about going to the media and actually my boss told me to do so too. The Columbus Tribune has a section called troubleshooters and I thought about writing them. And actually what I think we will do is just keep the stupid thing and install windows ourselves. As much as I hate to do that because of the principal of it, it may jus tbe easier that way.

Maybe give the newspaper a call before you install a new operating system? Dell didn't fill your order as specified. It's their responsibility to give you what you paid for.

Part of the price of the computer is the Windows license. You shouldn't have to pay for another one.

Also you would need to install all of the drivers somehow, which would be on the special Windows disc that should have been provided with the computer.

Either way, you will need Dell to fix this. Go ahead and write the newspaper.

This was the news story where a customer got Ubuntu instead of Windows and Dell refused to fix it until the media was called:
