Federal Express Corporation Complaint - Same-Day Service Does Not Mean Same-Day Delivery! - Same-Day Delivery

Complaint
Review by cdb3 on 2009-07-15
I shipped a critical package using Fed-Ex Same Day Service. FedEx called me two times throughout the afternoon, saying the plane was delayed. I checked the weather, no storms at all showing, not even rain. The package finally got there hours after the receiving office was closed. The driver re-delivered the next morning. When I received the invoice for $175.00, I called FedEx and was told that they put it on a commercial plane, and since they had updated me with status, there was no money-back guarantee. So, I paid the invoice because it was not worth the argument, but will never use this service again. Not only did they not do what they told me they would do, they were very unconcerned with the situation. The representative could not tell me why the package was put on a plane that left so late anyway. There is a flight leaving Houston for the destination city (Chicago) every hour. Next time I'll just drive to the airport myself and send my package counter-to-counter for around $40.00. Basically, I ended up paying FedEx to drive the package to the airport and to pick it up when it arrived.

Not to make an excuse for FedEx the delay may not have been weather related. In their tariff under Liabilities Not Assumed any delay outside their control is not covered by a guarantee. Their only obligation is to notify the shipper (you) which they did. As to them not placing the package on that hourly flight I can surmise that FedEx doesn't have a contract with all airlines to carry their shipments. If you want to press the issue then contact FedEx at a higher level to find out why there was a delay and maybe you can get some sort of refund.

Thanks. It's been paid already so I'm not going to pursue this any further. I should have looked into the guarantee further, but as you can probably tell it was a very rushed morning. I'm sure you are correct in that their only obligation is to notify me, but the "It-wasn't-us" excuse isn't one I'm willing to take a chance on again. It's a very expensive maybe. Thanks for the suggestion though!
