Progressive Insurance Complaint - Auto accident/insurance - Auto insurance

Auto insurance - Complaint
Review by Randy on 2004-06-15
DULUTH, MINNESOTA -- We only had our policy with Progressive for 3 days and my wife hit a deer. I was reluctant about turning it in with such a new policy, but I ended up doing so anyway. The damage was about $1700. They interviewed my wife over the phone 3 times. Then they had her interviewed by their attorneys. Then they had us both interviewed by two of their attorneys and the claims adjuster. They were horribly rude and accusing. We are honest, hard working people who had an unfortunate accident. My wife reported the accident immediately, had a police report, and did everything she was supposed to do. They were happy to take our money, but when they were asked to do what they were paid to do, they backed-out. Terrible company and customer service.

We missed several hours of work playing their little 20 Questions games. We ended up paying for the damage ourselves but Progressive dragged it out long enough so they could get a couple more monthly payments out of us. Which were EXTREMELY expensive. They had us on high risk when we should not have been. We of course dropped them after they made their decision. We found another insurance company for almost $200 per month less!! Progressive Insurance is nothing but a bunch of thieves with a license to steal. Beware of this company! They will charge much more than they should and if you have an accident, they will do whatever they can to get out of paying. It's no wonder they have so much money to spend on advertising.

I can understand the initial round of questioning, it was, afterall, a brand spankin' new policy. However, with a police report, which shows the date the deer hit your car (we never hit deer in my opinion, they hit us) I can't believe they refused the claim. Did the Progressive agent have a chance to inspect the car prior to your taking out the policy, or did you take it out online? I'm an agent with State Farm, and I've had a couple accidents that happened within a short time of writing a policy for a client. I've never seen such a bad experience. Our claims reps will call me to see if I inspected the car for prior damage, and as long as I have, these claims go through, with the proper inspection of the vehicle, of course. With a deer claim too, I just don't know what to say about that. It's not like you claimed a hit & run, that I could understand some investigation. I hope you have better luck with your new company!!

One other thing, I'm just wondering why they had you rated as high risk although you say you shouldn't have been. Did you let your old policy lapse? If so, that could also have led to the scrutiny they put you through for the claim.

Hey thanks for the info I'm shopping for car insurance now and it will definetely will not be with Progressive. Has anyone heard anything bad about Nationwide?

I've never heard anything terrible about Nationwide but of course I'm sure you could do your research and find complaints about them, any insurance company as a matter of fact. Talk with your friends and see who their carriers are and if they've had any positive or negative experiences. Good Luck!

terrapin, I'd of course recommend State Farm, but I'm a little biased. :) I've heard some pretty good things about Nationwide. Here in Michigan they're rates are a little high, but I don't know if that's true in every state. I also heard from a Nationwide that they're supposed to have a rate decrease here in MI, so that's good news.

Michigan is one of the worst states for insurance companies and the rates reflect it. Some people like having a personal agent they can talk to and others like the ease of phone service and being able to contact sometime anytime. It just depends on your preference!

PLEASE tell me your wife got a police report when this occurred. Otherwise, I can see why you were put through the wringer. The claims adjuster would be able to view the car (tell me also that she didn't have the car washed after the accident!) & tell the deer hair & blood was in the hood or bumper. Also, the dents in the car would tell the story too. Is there something you're not telling us?
