Chipotle Complaint - Great food, needs more salsa

Complaint
Review by clutzycook on 2009-09-16
ALGONQUIN, IL -- My husband and I LOVE Chipotle burritos. We also love the chips and salsa. I could eat the salsa by itself. My only complaint is that while they give you a good-sized bag of chips, they only give you a little cup with maybe 3 tablespoons of salsa in it. That's nowhere close to being enough for two people when they're enjoying the chips. usually I get a little salsa on a couple of chips, then my husband polishes off what's left of the salsa (maybe a tablespoon or two), leaving me with just plain chips. As I said before; awesome salsa, there just needs to be more of it.

All you have to do is ask for extra salsa.
Posted by clutzycook on 2009-09-16:
yeah and then charge me an extra 50 cents for it. I just want enough salsa to go with my chips for the price. Besides, they'd probably mess up and put in on my burrito, LOL :P.

another good review, clutzycook.

I had no idea they charged for extra salsa.
Posted by justthefaxx on 2009-09-16:
You're right. What they give you is good for about 3 or 4 chips.
Posted by LadyScot on 2009-09-16:
Sorry but I gotta say it. If spending a dollar or two more for extra salsa is going to break you perhaps eating out is not for you.
Evey Mexican restaurant I have been in only gives a little salsa and sour cream and guacamole. Extra is $2.50. I buy it. I know how hard it is to maintain a business in these times.
Posted by KingJames on 2009-09-16:
sorry but I gotta say it. you're wrong and there's no need for you to suggest someone is too poor to eat out.

most mexican restaurants provide all the salsa one wants free of charge.

they do however typically charge for xtra sour cream or xtra guacamole.
Posted by LadyScot on 2009-09-16:
King, I didn't say the OP WAS too poor. Just suggesting that if 50 cents is too much perhaps they should stay home.

The key word is MOST. Not ALL. My Mex place to eat has the best food that is why I am willing to pay. Why does everyone complain about THIS store charging just because THAT one gives it free? THIS store is not THAT one.
Posted by clutzycook on 2009-09-16:
I'm not saying that an extra 50 cents is too much to spend, but what I am saying is that if they give you a lot of chips, they should give you an appropriate amount of salsa to eat with it. I don't want extra, I just want enough :)
Posted by KingJames on 2009-09-16:
nah, it was rude and you meant to be snide. else you wouldn't have posted it for there was no mention of clutzycook stating it was [breaking] her to spring for the extra 50 cents, but rather that it seemed odd to offer so many chips, yet so little salsa.

Posted by trp2hevn on 2009-09-16:
What's the point in getting chips if there isn't enough salsa for them? The Mexican restaurant that I frequent gives you a little tiny bowl too, but thank goodness all I have to do is ask and they bring me some more. I'd rather give an extra .50 in the tip than to have to pay for salsa that should just come with the chips.
Posted by LadyScot on 2009-09-16:
It is the same with the cheese dip. You get a little and more chips than you get sauce. I was not being snide. I can't help that you take things as an attack.
Posted by zzrokk on 2009-09-16:
Clutzy, I have seen that happen before and they put it on another guy's burrito!
When they give me a funny look when I ask for salsa I offer up the 50 cent. It's worth it.
My beef with them is the lack of meat in their meals.
Posted by Wally86 on 2009-09-16:
Ladyscot, I like you, but some of your comments do tend to get out of line. They should give you a decent amount of salsa for your chips. Places like Baja fresh have a bar were you can pick up as much salsa as you want for free.
Posted by KingJames on 2009-09-16:
let's talk about this ladyscot. esp since it seems I'm not the only one that took your remark to be quite rude. if you weren't intending to be snide, what exactly was your intention in posting such a remark?

again, clutzycook made no mention that it was a financial strain on her to pony up the extra 50 cents, she was simply [and did a great job, I might add] stating that it would be nice if there was enough salsa for the amount of chips served.
Posted by zzrokk on 2009-09-16:
We are talking CHIPOTLE not Baja and LadyS is spot on regarding these tough times for restaurants.
Posted by KingJames on 2009-09-16:
so you support her rude comment to clutzycook, eh zzrokk? is that what you're saying?
Posted by LadyScot on 2009-09-16:
I apologize then if my comment was taken as being rude. It was not intended as being rude. Trust me. I am the least politically correct person you will ever meet. If I intend you to be insulted, you will know. :)

I only mentioned the 50 cents because the OP mentioned it as part of her complaint.

Posting words does not really have a personal feel so emotion can not come through. I am not mean, but if I intend to tick you off you will know cause I will tell you lol.

Usually when it's tough times for restaurants they bend over backwards to attract/keep customers. It's just salsa for pete's sake. Every single Mexican restaurant around here gives you all the salsa you can slurp down. Keep pissing off your customers there's a business plan that can't fail.

Excellent comments KJ and Wally.
Posted by clutzycook on 2009-09-16:
I know they did that, zz. I read your review shortly after I posted mine :).

As far as the chips and salsa debate, if they only want to give a few tablespoons of salsa to the customers, then they should reduce the amount of chips given. I don't doubt that these are tough times for restaurants, but they're tough times for the average Joe Taco-eater too, and if we're going to spend our hard-earned money in any business, we want to get our money's worth. Am I right?
Posted by Fufu487 on 2009-09-16:
lol people, people!! Lets just relax, sit down, and talk about this calmly over a nice bowl of chips and salsa :D

Can't we all just get along?? Lol
Posted by Stew on 2009-09-16:
Clutzycook, The customer is always right so of course you're right.
Posted by Fufu487 on 2009-09-16:
and btw, im with you all the way clutzy, I LOVE salsa, and would be heartbroken to eat dry chips :(
Posted by clutzycook on 2009-09-16:
LOL Fufu. Chips, sure. Salsa, we're gonna be short. :D
Posted by jktshff1 on 2009-09-16:
I don't see anything on this post that was rude. The opinions and suggestions were both well written and polite.
If offense was taken by anyone, they need to get over it.

*smacks Stew with a bowl full of salsa*
:-)
I, too, dig Chipotle. Hmmmm... I guess it's just a Texas thing, but whenever I go into my local Chipotle, they don't skimp on the salsa. But, then again, I don't know where you're from Clutzy. You could be from Texas, too. If not, come on down... !
Posted by KingJames on 2009-09-16:
of course you're right, clutzy. good job.
Posted by clutzycook on 2009-09-16:
I'm from IL, bear. That's a little far to go for salsa, even though it's probably better there anyway. And I hear everything's bigger in Texas, so it's only natural that the salsa servings would be as well :).
Posted by bearkatkitten on 2009-09-16:
Ah, that explains it, Clutzy. j/k :-)
Well, use the knowledge I have bestowed upon you should you ever decide to give Texas a visit. :-)
Posted by jktshff1 on 2009-09-16:
+1 bear, clutzy, being from the Republik of Illinois explains it. LOL!
Posted by clutzycook on 2009-09-16:
what's that supposed to mean jk?
Posted by jktshff1 on 2009-09-16:
Just saying that Illinois is not know for it's Mexican food, but more for it's politik's from a dumb Southerner's point of view. No offense intended....welcome to M3C!!!
Posted by zzrokk on 2009-09-16:
I almost went to Chipotle today but the line was outside of the door. The chips and salsa is nearly a meal in itself. ($1.75) Even Stewart can afford that on his "ONCUE" budget, right Stew?
Posted by littleyaya on 2009-09-16:
I cannot eat tortilla chips plain. They MUST have salsa or guac or soemthing on them. 50 cents is ridicilous to pay for extra salsa.
Posted by littleyaya on 2009-09-16:
Zz, I can make you some nummy mexican food
Posted by clutzycook on 2009-09-16:
You're absolutely right about politics in Illinois, jk, and not in a good way either. To make matters worse, I live near Chicago, the birthplace of political corruption (or was that NYC?).

ZZ, When I walk into Cue it's like a beginning scene of a Cheers episode -- STEW!!!! I get more free soda refills than a cop and the roller food that's too old to sell.. yeah, they turn me on to it. So ah little man don't be dissing the Cue.
Posted by jktshff1 on 2009-09-16:
clutzy, take your pick.
Stew, the way I travel, they do that at the hotels I stay in.
Voted this helpful for the information. A particular location would be more helpful.
Posted by zzrokk on 2009-09-16:
Clutzy, how many DECADES have the Daley's been running that city?
"....roller food that's too old to sell...." Yuck!
I can't talk since I had one of those huge $2.49 microwaveable burritos from RITE-AID today.
Posted by clutzycook on 2009-09-16:
Darned if I know, zz. Too long, I'm sure. I'm originally from central IL. I only moved up here about 4 years ago and I live in the suburbs to boot, so I stay as far away from that junk as possible. Of course, you have to remember that his dad ran the city for eons back in the day, too, so I'm sure it seems like he's been there even longer. BTW, did you get a bottle of pepto to go with that burrito? :p

JK, I edited the review just for you :).

My Mother is from Chicago. I used to hate going there for vacation in the 60s and 70s.
Posted by clutzycook on 2009-09-16:
yeah I feel your pain. If you thought it was bad then, it's probably even worse now. I refuse to drive there unless I have locked doors and a GPS.
Posted by jktshff1 on 2009-09-16:
Thanks, LOL, it is just that just because a particular location screws things up, doesn't make the whole chain bad.
Posted by clutzycook on 2009-09-16:
I never said it was a screw-up. I was just saying that I'd like more salsa. The store as a whole isn't too bad. Food's decent, workers are relatively polite. Can't get much better than that.
Posted by jktshff1 on 2009-09-16:
'cept they need to put more salsa in the bowl!!! Nite all
Posted by Face to Face on 2009-09-16:
still haven't checked out the Chipotle,i'm a Mexican Food snob.It has to be authentic for me to give it some respect.
I love those 'fast food' Mexican joints that have the salsa bar, along with fresh chips. You can get all you want @ no extra charge..dine in or take out. There are a few up by me..Rodrigo's is my all time favorite...there is a great Mexican bakery a few towns over that has the best Carne Asada burritos i've ever slopped down, worth the drive for sure.
