I received a letter from this company two days ago. The letter stipulated that I have 30 days to dispute the debt. My letter disputing this debt is in the mail. However, before even 3 days pass, I am receiving calls from this company on my cell phone. The caller I. D. is "unknown". These calls use up precious minutes on my cell phone. Why do they not wait for the 30 day period to expire before the harassing calls begin?

These debt collection companies should be regulated to stop harassing people.

They don't need to wait 30 days to start contacting you by phone. As long as they sent the initial notice to you before they started calling, there are no violations.
Disputing a debt will not stop contact with you. If you want the calls and or letters to stop, you need to send them a cease and desist letter requesting that. If you do send them one, you should send it certified with return receipt. You also have the right to request a validation of the debt, in which they will have to send to you within 30 days from receipt of that request. Again, it would need to be sent certified with return receipt so you will have proof of when they rec... more >>

For as many people who have unlimited call plans now, it is surprising at how many have to pay for their minutes when they get a call from a bill collector, but not from friends and family....and that is another issue collectors have with cellphones, we don't know what kind of plan people have. Some have to pay for their minutes, others just pay a basic price for unlimited use.

who says you have to answer the phone?

Geesh Pepper, after all my typing...I could have gotten away with it as simple as that? LOL!

I never answer a call that does not have caller ID associated with it.

If I don't know the number, I don't answer it.

only reason i do is cos sometimes my boyfriend's phone comes in as "unknown"

That's why my kids have Cricket Phones. Best deal going for 50 bucks a month.

DebtorBasher, your information was very helpful. Thank you. What I discovered could do was locate the 'unknown' debt collector's number and block it. Paying for unwanted incoming calls and voicemails can eat into your minutes. BTW, can I call 800 numbers from Skype for free?

Sure will. Just signed up for Vonage and now trying to find the best way of 'unbundling' TV and Internet. I don't watch much TV so I guess the basic channels would suffice. Can you advise on the best internet service?
