Another Wal-Mart Shopper Scam?

This may just be an observational warning.

I was shopping at Wal-mart last night after work (9/30/09)and in the vitamin section when two attractive young women approached me and asked if I could help them find some prenatal vitamins. I agreed and located the vitamins. Suddenly I found myself in a conversation with one of the young ladies about how her boyfriend had run off with another with another woman and that she was two months pregnant.

She then told me that she was starting a job next week and didn't have any money for baby food, diapers and the vitamins.

Of course this would put anybody with a heart on the spot tugging at your heart strings. So, I went and purchased the items for them. I noticed she was talking to someone on the cell phone while I was checking out the items with the cashier.

When I walked them to their car, I was thinking to myself about how she could afford a cell phone,

much less a brand new car. I helped them place the groceries in their car and when I returned to my home, I noticed my receipt was not in any of my bags which puzzled me.

When I came to work today, still a little puzzled about the whole affair, I explained the situation to some of my co-workers.

They explained to me that those two young ladies would return the items back to Wal-Mart in a couple of hours, with my receipt, and get the money back in exchange. One of my co-workers then recalled that happening to someone else that they knew.

Another scam? Maybe.

Interesting; I've never heard of this one, but your co-worker's explanation seems logical.

I don't shop at Walmart but this is a good warning for others. Thanks for the post.

Hmm what shame that they got such a good natured person such as yourself :) I admire you for being kind enough to purchase the items for the seemingly troubled women in hardship. Good for you :) Baddddddd on them

    justthefaxx (10/01/2009)
That would only work if you paid with cash. I would have seen that scam coming from a mile away.

If you paid by debit or credit, is there a way for them to get your information when they return the items?

    old fart (10/01/2009)
Chances are that hey returned the items for cash and then went out to purchase some coke... and by coke I don't mean the bottled kind..

I wish I had encounter the ladies so that I could buy them jewelry and invite them to my place for two on one action.

It sounds like the people who tell you they need a few bucks for gas so they can get home to their sick children. Just tell them where the nearest family-support center is, and they'll leave you alone. (Stay and watch them approach the next five people, though.)

In Orlando, there a many people on street corners with signs that say "homeless, need help, God bless." My understanding is they make pretty good money because they are out there for weeks at the same spot.

This one guy downtown I would see daily. I never gave money but said hello as I would to anyone. One day he had a sign, "need money to get home to Detroit." A few weeks later I saw him again, and said How was the trip to Detroit? His face was a blank expression. Obviously, he did not remember his detroit scam sign.

The ONLY time I gave a bum something he had a sign that said "I ain't gonna lie...I want a drink!" Honesty is the best policy.

If it looks like a scam, sounds like a scam, it probably is a scam. Thanks for the heads up, Hypnotica.

Those fine sexy ladies were testing the man of how much money he got. I mean who would rob a person for a $5 purchase? For real talk...

    wallyworld (10/01/2009)
MRM I’m with you, I’d be like can I have your number first and would you ladies like to come back to my place for a nice candlelight dinner * Wink Wink *

    Ytropious (10/01/2009)
This is why I never bother to help people like that. A guilt trip is almost always a scam waiting to happen.

    goduke (10/02/2009)
You need to report this to WM with a description of the crooks so that they can watch out for them.

    DebtorBasher (10/03/2009)
Why would she need diapers and baby food if she was only two months pregnant? Yeah, you were scammed and that's ashame too because it's the people who 'care' that get ripped off. Blessings will come your way for being a good person.

    MRM (10/03/2009)
Perhaps she has other babies at the house.

    DigitalCommando (10/03/2009)
Karma is a mofo. In my opinion, stores should not allow return of consumables like food items and drinks. How do we know they didn't put poison in it?
Why would they ask a customer for assistance instead of a store employee? Maybe that would be a future tip-off.

    DebtorBasher (10/03/2009)
That's true Mr. Mike and I know I'm gonna get hit by the firing squad for this comment...but if she can't afford to feed and diaper those she already has, then she should keep her legs together when a 'boyfriend' visits. It's called acting responsibly. Instead of asking strangers to provide for her, she should go to the free clinic for some free birth control.

There's obviously a reason why her family won't help her...or the friend she was with. Oh yeah, I know why, because she's lying and scamming people! I know if I didn't have money, I wouldn't be going to the store.

The poster was the victim here, not the two girls.

    LadyScot (10/03/2009)
The fact that she was yapping on a cell phone should have clued you in. The moment I saw the car, I would have turned right back around and took the stuff to CS for a refund. WHY are people so gullible?

    rtta (10/20/2009)
The other day a young lady approached me on the street and asked for 4.00 so she could take the subway to school. I gave her 4 quarters and told her she's a quarter of the way there. She said she was embarrassed to ask for money and I told her she should be.

    PepperElf (10/20/2009)
    probably a scam
there's a few people who do that all the time outside of walmart

    asking for money for gas
or for you to buy items for them

    Schez (10/22/2009)
For what it's worth, Digital, a lot of stores don't put those returns back on the shelf. Our store is required to claims them out- which roughly means marking down anything that looks like it's even been stared at too hard to zero and tossing it, and donating everything else to a food bank, where people more skilled than we are at spotting scams can look it over for tampering.

    LadyScot (10/22/2009)
Digital, any food item that has left the store is claimsed out. It does not go back on the shelf. Poison is a major reason why.

    Schez (10/23/2009)
On that note, LadyScot, you ever hear of that wacko that was going around Wal-Marts, injecting chemicals into food with a syringe? God, this world is getting scary.

    LadyScot (10/23/2009)
Schez, no I never heard that? What the heck?!

MRM, at first I was with you, but then I realized I'm not sure I would put my d*ck in anything I picked up at Walmart.

    Haha! I'd use two!

    MRM
But they are two fine sexy ladies! How is it a scam? If the man werent being so cheap and bought them jewelries, those sexy ladies would be at his place for two on one action.

I have a bridge I would like to sell.......
