My parents are old and not very technically astute. During their trip through Europe, they used a phone from Call In Europe. Towards the end of their trip, the phone died. They threw it in a garbage can. Apparently someone picked it up and made $6000 worth of calls. By the time, I got the bill with the charge, it was already 45 days after the fact due to the very slow billing procedure Call in Europe has.

I tried to reason, but the company sued in small claims court. I paid $5000. What my parents and I stumbled into exposed the very dangerous risk one assumes by signing up with Call in Europe. The usage is tied to your credit card with no set limit. In hind sight, that was an incredible oversight on my part, and a mistake I wouldn't want to wish on anyone. Now that I am poorer by $5000, I realized during my last trip through Paris and Frankfurt that one can easily rent cheap cell phone service right at the airport. Don't bother with Call in Europe. Don't put your credit at risk by exposing your credit card to unexpected, unfortunate events.

Call In Europe needs to shut down its risky business and stop exposing unaware consumers to the very dangerous billing system they have in place. Avoid this company.

I agree. There should be no open ended authorization available on the charge card.

That said, why would your parents throw the phone away? It appears (since calls were made) that the phone was not dead as they had thought. Why wouldn't they call the company to report the problem with the cell phone and turn the service off?
