When my 70 yr old mother stated to me that upon renting a 26' long U-Haul truck to move approx. 85 miles she asked the lady that serviced her if U-Haul had any guys that could load her belongings for her. The women told her no but she could call her son and a friend of his but their starting rate would be $200.00 for the first hour and then $40.00 per guy per hour.

When they were finished, the son called U-Haul to have his mother pick them up. The lady pulled in to where the U-Haul was. Her son said some thing to his mother and when my daughter walked by her and her son my daughter heard her state,"is that the bit--"My daughter approached my mother noticing a distress look on her face. After she informed my mother of the foul language from the U-Haul service lady. My mother went to her to find out the ammount owing for loading the U-Haul. When my mom informed me they charged her $600.00 cash only was the most appalling charge I have ever heard of or about from U-Haul. With experience my self with U-Haul and needing helpers to load a truck for me U-Haul explained to me they do not have any body there at theri office but would get on the enternet and contact e-movers. My experience 2 guys loaded the same size truck with in 6 hours and I was only charged $385.00. I called this u-Haul location and spoke to the women and couldn't really get a word in edge wise, for she was screeming at me then hung up. I called back and a man answered, I informed him maybe we were disconnected some how. WOW no we we'rnt and he was yelling, that I couldn't anderstand all he was saying. I asked for his boss and was told she was the boss, I stated I knew their was some one over their heads for me to talk to and was told there was not. I informed him I would be contacting the Attorney Generals Office and aslo the Better Business Bureo.

Company Response:

My name is Maria Palmisano and I am with U-Haul International. I first would like to offer you my apology for the rude treatment you received at our U-Haul Dealer. Please be advised the U-Haul Dealer in question is an independent business and not U-Haul owned. This means they rent U-Haul trucks and trailers as an additional service to the public, however, their main business is their mini-storage. We do have a regular program for counseling with dealers to give them the benefit of our experience in successful U-Haul service. As independent businessmen they are free to accept or reject our suggestions in accordance with their own independent judgment. Please be assured the information you provided will be forwarded to our Regional Office for further follow up to ensure our standards are understood and observed. We appreciate the information you provided as it is only through communication with our customers that we learn whether or not our programs are successful.

Why would this be a complaint against Uhaul?
Uhaul doesn't provide movers. Just trucks and trailers to rent for the move.
You should be having it out with the woman that worked the desk since it was her son and friend that was helping your mother move... not any Uhaul employees. Sounds like the son and friend took advatage of your mother... not Uhaul.

totally agree. I would have called a charity or driven by your local Home Depot to get some guys to help you. You most likely could have paid a professional mover for less than these guys charged.

Bear, Dan, I was thinking the same thing,. U-Haul is a trunk rental, NOT a moving company. As far as I can tell, the woman was being nice in recommending someone to help your mother. They wanted to get paid. You only state the amount, you do not state HOW long it took. $200 for the first hour, and $80 each additional hour...with my calculator that is 6 hours...were those guys the only ones doing the loading and unloading? At 70 I doubt your mom could lift much.

YOUR experience has no bearing as you used e-movers for your move. What I would charge is not the same as a moving company.

The foul language abuse came from your daughter. If you mother is that frail, it was cruel of your daughter to hear that said and then "inform[ed] my mother of the foul language from the U-Haul service lady." What purpose was served by that, other than upsetting your mother? Didn't you ever teach your daughter not to do that?

Obviously, your mother was taken advantage of. You knew she was moving since your daughter was there. How did you expect the things to be loaded? If you were so concerned, you should have made loading arrangements BEFORE the truck was rented.

P.s. At least there was no animal hair in this U-Haul, Bearkatkitten

Agree with the others-and just want to add that in my experience, unloading is easier and takes less time than loading-when you are thinking about placing items in specific places, wrapping breakables in blankets etc.

after reading comments and getting a little disturbed, People say that U-haul had nothing to do with the two men that scammed my mother out of $600.00 to load the truck for her. This particular women at this particular location may own the property and have her own business licence but she does not own the U-haul trucks and equitment, if I'm not mis-taking U-Haul corperation owns all of U-haul but leeses them to business owners, so I would say she is a representitive for U-haul. U-haul dealers recommend E-Move if a person ask if U-Haul has any body to load their belongings, because their licenced, bonded, and insured and very resonable in cost... more >>

OP, you asked if there was anyone at the UHAUL place to unload. She said no. You never asked if she could recommend a moving company. You said so yourself.

She works for UHAUL, the son and friend don't. UHAUL has no dog in this fight.

You have the bad attitude because you think that $600 is too much for these guys to get paid to move YOUR mothers belongings. How much did YOU unload? How long did they work? WHAT were they moving? You cal it scamming. I call it the boys wanting to get paid for the work they did trying to help your mother out.

Sorry darlin, but a moving company probably would have charged more, and you would have had to... more >>
