Don't choose Comcast

A Comcast employee came over to my place to install Internet and without asking, grabbed my laptop which was hidden under a pile of clothes, while my wife was calling me from the kitchen. When she came back to the living room, the employee had turned my laptop and plugged whatever device needed to be plugged to install Internet.

I arrived five minutes later and found the situation suspicious.

Don't they teach their employee to ask if they can use the computer, where the computer is etc.

A key-logger can be installed in 10 seconds if you have physical access to a computer. Then they monitor every move you make and still your identity, bank account... You will never know you have a keyl-logger on your computer. Comcast is the perfect place to work to do this and the guy really fit the computer hacker profile. Comcast running an identity check on their employee is not a guarantee of anything. Hackers are all over the place and most of them have never been convicted of anything.

So BEWARE! Watch what they are doing on your computer when they come to install Internet. All it takes is a USB Key and in two click, you have a key-logger in your computer that you will never see. Everything you will type from this point on will be recorded from a distance; passwords ect

I thought I'd share this event. Just be careful.
But my point is: Comcats never did anything about it while I spend 3 days reformating my computer.

If you can choose between Comcast and another company, don't choose Comcast.

You are right-that might be some sort of shady activity taking place.

Which is why I either stay with the install/repairperson until they are finished what they are doing. As much as possible, at least. I don't stare at the furnace guy-but I make sure there is nothing down there I don't want him to see/access.
The wife can wait (I know. Try telling her that!).

What did they do to your CPU? Am I missing something here?

I'm not seeing myself leave a laptop out when a stranger's in the house.

Knives either but people do. He is the Comcast tech not an escaped convict.

Comcast runs background checks like every other company. Were you at all complaining about wifi signal strength? He probably wanted to see what your laptop was picking up. OMG VIRUSES...really? The Comcast man is using your laptop to put a virus on it...REALLY?! People these days are overly suspicious and borderline crazy.

honestly, re-formatting your computer because one of their techs was using it - to likely check internet connection - is just ridiculous.

You DO realize the tech needs access to the computer in order to install internet yes?

If anything just to see that your computer can get to a web page.

Besides... To be honest I'm surprised you left him in a room alone while installing.

You don't trust the tech to touch the computer, yet you trust him to be alone in a room unsupervised...?
