Costco Wholesale Corporation warehouses (specifically the one on Route 35 in Hazlet, NJ) suck!!! Costco had better do something about the nasty employees working the front entrance checking membership cards. One day, a couple of weeks ago, as I was attempting to enter the warehouse, a nasty, middle-aged, female Costco employee (who was too busy bullsh!tting with another useless employee to initially notice me) grabbed me by the arm and demanded to see my membership card. It had been in my hand all along, but this beeotch never saw it because she was too busy yakking and not paying attention to doing her job. I told her to take her hand off of me, and I proceeded to file a complaint against her with the manager.

If you knew the card was going to need to be checked (and I assume you had it out for that reason), why didn't you stop and show it to her?

We recently visited a Costco for the first time. We were told we could look around and if we saw anything we liked, we could purchase it and pick up our membership cards on the way out. Well we did some shopping, and filled our cart with all kinds of frozen foods, etc. After checking out, we stopped by the customer service desk to "pick up our cards". Little did we know the process takes about 45 minutes. It would have been nice to know BEFORE we loaded up on frozen goods in our cart. We ended up leaving without getting our cards and haven't been back since. Word of warning, get your card FIRST, then shop if you plan on buying any peri ... more >>

In response to chris75056_1, I'd just like to add that it is not my job to stop and make sure that the front entrance membership card checker sees my card. I am a CUSTOMER, and she is an EMPLOYEE. Her job is to stand at the front entrance and check (the key word is CHECK) customers entering the store to see that they have valid membership cards. She should not be engaged in personal conversations with other employees while she is supposed to be doing her job, and she has no right to EVER to put her hands on a customer.

    Pay attention next time!

Bababooey, technically it IS your job as a customer to make sure you present your ID upon entering. You act as though just because she was talking with someone, she was neglecting her duties. While the arm-grabbing thing was uncalled for, you knew you should have shown your ID, you didn't, she called you on it, etc. Next time, just present the card to whoever is there, regardless of whether they're having a conversation or not. It's just that simple.

bababooey............you did the right thing.....and pay no attention to the people on here saying otherwise. She would have been grabbing for a rag to stop the bleeding had she grabbed me like that.

bababooey..........you can also sue the hell out the store AND the employee that physically touched you..........I would.........and take a vacation on Costco.

I agree its her job to check the cards, thats what she's being paid for, not to be talking to other employees and not paying attention, and she had absolutely no right putting her hands on you.

chris75056_1: It is not the job of the consumer to go out of their way to ensure an employee is doing their job. When I visit Costco, the employees at the door are very often chatting with other employees. I simply ignore them, and go on with my shopping. Frankly, it is a waste of payroll dollars, since they are not actually checking to see if your Costco account is actually valid -- only that you have a card. If you don't have a card, you won't be able to pay anyhow. Warehouses like BJ's don't bother with checking membership cards.

chris75056_1, you are a jerk! It seem that you enjoy critisizing people for no good reason. Don't say that I am wrong and try to blame me for the conduct of that Costco employee. Even the manager of the store apologized to me and said that the employee at the front entrance wasn't doing her job properly!

Name calling. Nice. Your maturity rating just shot sky high.

Well its kind of like going to a club and trying to pass the bouncer without getting carded. you know you should present your ID so stand in front of her and hold it out.

I don't understand why so many people out there are so passive. When it comes to patronizing a business which I pay a $45 annual membership to be a member of, I feel that the employees of that business should bend over backwards to treat their customers with courtesy and respect. The Costco employees who check membership cards at the Costco location in Ocean Township, NJ are always polite and respectful... why can't they behave likewise at the Hazlet, NJ location?

Bravo for going to management! I would have gone for the throat for that move. Power hungry people. It's a costco for heaven sake, not a military base. And yes, you are the customer, you don't work for the employee they work for you. At the Costco I go to in Palm Springs, they rarely really look, I could be showing them my Smart and final card most of the time. Hope you got, at the very least a free years membership and for the employee, their walking papers.

I know that Costco Members are very rude to the Costco employees, and attempt to cause trouble for them when they have a chance. Not all but a few who seem to hang around the place for entertainment rather than to go shopping. It is a food club, and you pay to get lower food prices, not to abuse people who work for a living.

Here's an update: That nasty biotch who put her hands on me at the Costco Wholesale in Hazlet, NJ back in July 2004 has long since been fired. The Costco employees who now stand at the front entrance checking membership ID cards at that location are pleasant and polite, and I have never had a problem with them (or any other Costco employee) since the incident described above. It seems that this nasty woman who I had a problem with was simply not cut out for dealing with the public!

I highly doubt that this person was fired for this reason solely because, believe it or not, Costco employees are teamsters and it is really difficult to get them fired (I've heard of some employees even being caught stealing and only suspended). They do talk a lot, you would think for $18/hr and full benefits (even if they only work part-time) they would do a better job! Bababooey, the Ocean Twp. location is non-union, which would explain the pleasantness!

as a former Costco Employee on behalf of Costco Wholesale - I'd like to apologize from the bottom of my heart for that employees bad conduct.
I wouldn't have treated you like that.
