K-Mart Complaint - Employees Working On Thanksgiving

Complaint
Review by Downnwind on 2009-11-22
My family will NOT be shopping at K-Mart any longer due to their lack of compassion for their employees. Making them work on Thanksgiving Day is absurd and another all-time low for greed and the almighty dollar. Way to go K-Mart I hope your sales flop on Thursday ...

K-Mart ... NOT SMART.

No offense, lots of businesses are open on Thanksgiving these days. When I was a customer care supervisor for a national wireless company, the reps were scheduled based first on preference, then if no one else wanted the holiday, it went by length of service.

Such is life these days.

Um, are you gonna fly on Thanksgiving or any other holiday? Airlines are open 24/7/365. I never got a holiday off when I worked for an airline

Then you need to stay away from Wal-mart, cause they are open on Thanksgiving also.

I always remember stores being open on thanksgiving, my local fry's and Safeway have been doing it for years.

K-mart was open last thanksgiving too or at least the one down the street from me was

Thank you, Kmart (and all the other stores), for choosing to be open when your customers want, and perhaps need, you to be open.

Perhaps the OP can complain about stores being open on the Sabbath, too?

Guess what, employees choose to work Thanksgiving. Where I work we don't work Thanksgiving but they were leaning towards doing it this year. We were asked to volunteer on a sign up sheet. The sheet was FILLED by the time the day was over. There's nothing wrong with working Thanksgiving. A lot of places are open Thanksgiving so it's not like Kmart is going rogue or something.

ER's will be open on Thanksgiving also. So will the police and fire departments. So K-Mart is not the only one wanting their employee's to work.

Nothing wrong with folks earning a little extra income on the holidays.

The world doesn't stop spinning because of a holiday...Thanksgiving, Christmas, whatever the case may be. A lot of my family members work retail or in other industries that require working on holidays. That's why we typically do our get-togethers either a few days before or a few days after the national holiday, when everybody can agree on a date and time.

Target will not be open but they will be having employees coming in to get the store ready for black friday and and unloading a truck. This was voluntary the sign up sheet filled up fast. I too will be working in fact wednesday I close the store and will continue working until 5am.

Just to put this out there too many employees want to work it's time-and-a-half and they need the money.

I don't have to work on Thanksgiving or the next day and since I am so new at my job, I don't get holiday pay. I wish I was working the holiday cause I am losing out on 2 days of pay. At other jobs I worked, I worked on holidays to earn the extra pay. Some people like that little bit of extra cash in their paychecks

I would like to inform my fellow M3C that Walgreens is open on Thanksgiving day from 9am-6pm. Gobble, gobble, gobble...

I'm of on Thanks and Friday, so that's cool for me.

Thanks MRM, I'll be able to buy my pack of smokes lol

So does that mean if your spouse suffers 3rd degree burns because your turkey explodes in the deep fryer, you won't be going to the ER? I always had to work either Thanksgiving or Christmas when I worked in the hospital. That's the way of things these days. If they weren't open on Thanksgiving and you needed something right away, you'd be on here complaining that they were closed.

Comparing a Hospital to a store is like comparing apples and oranges. Kinda silly

back in my younger days I volunteered to work the holidays so if there were any that had a family that wanted the day off, they could have it. That said, in retail jobs you are informed that you will be working nights, weekends, and holidays. There are no surprises.

Well, I work 4-10 on Turkey Day. I will be cooking my dinner on Saturday since I am off. OP, compassion has nothing to do with it. If you really feel that bad for us, complain to your family and friends and the customer who demand the store be available to ship in.

What is funny is that you can bet your booty that corporate will be closed up tighter than Ft. Knox.
Posted by ProConsumer on 2009-11-22:
Thats true Lady. Corporate was always closed on holidays. Our DM always made an appearance to show support. That man had my respect.
Posted by LadyScot on 2009-11-22:
Lolo..I just read my post. I said ship in...I meant SHOP in...I know I am tired now. And I am the one who complains about misspelled words!
Posted by goduke on 2009-11-23:
Some folks would rather work than have to be with their families. Some folks don't have a strong family to be with, so working helps them avoid feeling lonely on the holiday. Some folks need the money (remember all of those "in these hard times" posts?).

I suspect, however, that greed is not at the root. If cusotmers consistently stayed home on the holiday, then KMart wouldn't open. Guess it's a sign of the decline of the family. Probably should blame the gay marriage activists for that.

I know it's completely different, Wally, but I had nothing else to make my point with. I use what I got :). Silly comparison aside, I still think this guy would be the one to complain if they weren't open on Thanksgiving and he needed some last minute stuff for dinner.
Posted by goduke on 2009-11-23:
One more question...if you won't shop at any store that's open on Thanksgiving, where do you plan to shop in the future?
Posted by CrazyRedHead on 2009-11-23:
There is only one day out of the year that WalMart is actually closed for and that is Christmas. When I used to work for a wireless service provider I worked every holiday until I made my third year there. Although it is nice to spend Thanksgiving with family and friends it is really only another day. If my husband chose to work on Thanksgiving then he gets triple time but since he has five years there he gets the day off.

Write your congressman. In Oklahoma car dealerships and liquor stores by law can't be open on Sunday. It's passed all constitutional tests so ERGO pretty much any state legislature has the power to mandate that retail establishments be closed on Thanksgiving. Get involved!!! Make a difference!!!

in ny i don't know about alcohol stores, but grocery stores can sell beer on sundays... but not until after noon i think or soemthing like that.

i personally cannot bash a store for being open on thanksgiving or christmas

1) These days my family goes out for thanksgiving dinner.
2) I've had emergencies when i needed something on either day and was thankful there was at least one place open

my one "boycott" rule is that i boycott all stores on the day after thanksgiving. there is no sale worth going out into that hell for. ;-)

Pepper, here it is noon.
