Stamps.com Informative - Internet stamps and postage

Review by CopperDollar on 2010-03-18
I was very happy with the service I got from stamps.com.

It is very handy to be able to buy stamps with out running to the post office, but what I do not understand is why do they have to charge a fee to keep your account open if you are not using it every day. I print out stamps one page at a time and they will last me about 6 month then I will print some more, but in the meantime I pay a fee to keep the account open.

This seems to me that I am throwing good money away for the convenience of saving a trip to the post office, very 21st century and a wast of money.

This is even more so true if you consider that they have the use of all those unspent funds, which I am sure is substantial. The reason they charge a monthly fee is that they can attach an imaginary cost of keeping the account open, which in fact is probably too low to actually calulate when offset by investment income on the unspent funds.

A parallel is the voice mail service with Verison land line accounts. Last time i looked, they charged $4.95/month for the service. The actual monthly cost to them is less than a dime.

I would imagine, that selling stamps online has a very small profit margin, but I could be wrong. You are paying for the convenience.

Off topic - text messages cost cell phone providers $0.00, the small bits of information are transmitted "between" other data a voice calls; basically using space that someone else paid for. How you like them apples

Convenience comes at a cost. If they charge you what the USPS charges them to be able to print stamps, how would they make money? These days I don't use many stamps at all but when I need a couple, I go to the post office.

Stamps.com is not a good deal if you are only using it here and there. If you use it all the time, like with a business, you actually save money. I suggest just going to USPS.com and printing them there for only the cost of the postage.

Or, if you have a Paypal account, use the shipping center.
