Unsanitary food handling

The following applies to the Jack In The Box restaurants in Chino, CA (Walnut and Central) and Riverside, CA (Riverside and Central):

Diners should be aware that these two restaurants use unsafe and unsanitary food handling practices. In both restaurants, I observed employees scratching/picking noses/ears/teeth/butts (I kid you not) and then handling the prepared/unprepared foods immediately after without washing or even gloving hands.

Likewise I observed at least one employee from each restaurant not washing their hands after toileting (no water flow heard, they didn't even flush). Employees were observed picking up trash from floor, cleaning surfaces or the floor, etc. and then moving immediately to handling prepared/unprepared foods without washing hands or even putting on gloves. At the Chino location, I observed an employee serve food that had been dropped on the floor to a drive-thru customer.

In the case of both stores, I made immediate contact with the managers to discuss my observations. I then asked if the manager or at least one employee had any training in food handling (with subsequent certifications). I was told they are exempt, and as such did not. Both managers acknowledge the practices I observed were wrong, and that they would correct it immediately. I informed them I would return in one week to see for myself. Needless to say, I did not eat the food that day.

One week later, I observed the same unsafe and unsanitary practices. This time I was wearing my work uniform, which made clear I was now officially on duty and had the authority to conduct a complete inspection to find violations. You would think this would prevent most if not all of the violations I had observed a week earlier.

It didn't. In fact, it was worse.

In one case, my drink had a cigarette butt and two empty creamer containers in it, near the bottom.

I don’t understand this either. You imply you’re a health inspector, yet take no action, so we can assume you are out of jurisdiction. If you are an inspector, wouldn’t you know the proper channels to have them cited as oppose to posting this anonymously on the internet?

This sounds like a ex employee to me...

Looking at the profile of the person who posted this...as a nurse I highly doubt this restaurant cared much about the uniform. So are you an ex employee and if so, if these accusations are true, they need to be reported to your county health dept.

A health inspector does have the legal ability to cite an establishment for noncompliance. Bingo, disgruntled ex employee.

It appears to me, that to have witnessed all that was mentoned in post, this person needs to rethink her "profession". She would make a great detective.

I don't mean to seem confrontational, although that is my nature. But I have to know how as a nurse you would have the authority to conduct a complete inspection of this restaurant. And with that point, I think that if this a disgruntled employee these are some pretty harsh allegations.

I do not read where she alleges anything. She states it was something that she observed...therefore she is entitled to her perception.

I was not implying that I am a nurse, it meant that on her profile it states that she is a nurse which in no way would give her authority to do health inspections. Unless she is a County health nurse which would give her connections.

If you're an ex-employee, maybe you can hook me up with some deep fried tacos.

If you found that in the bottom of your cup, it was probably because they recognized you as someone who complained before (and you were right to do so). I'm sure you've seen on TV, reports of what people do to the foods when they complain. You said you were in your uniform, and had the authority to do a complete inspection...but did you? No, you just went to the same manager you went to before. Not much of an inspection.

Hey, speaking of Jack in the box..
Has anyone seen the girl that works the drive thru at Chino Hills? She's blonde, fair skin, green eyes, and a really pretty smile. Anyone know her name?? I usually have no gas in my truck since I spend all my cash on sourdough jacks just to see her face and touch the change she hands to me..(sighh) -Petey

The butt would be floating at the top. Are you a wanna be health inspector? If you are you could have shut those places down. Sounds like a "fish story".

Amazing. I am the original poster of the complaint. I have never worked for Jack In The Box nor any of its parent or subsidiary companies, affiliates, nor vendors.

In California, ANY healthcare worker may demand compliance with the healthcode, or have the business cited for failure to comply.

I have worked with JITB rep's to get the situation straightened out and bring the restaurant(s) back into compliance.

Oh, and since the restaurant is next door to the hospital I work in, I have more than a vested interest in bringing them into compliance. I don't want my patients getting sick, nor my coworkers.

Amazing how quickly others a ... more >>

Wow, such hostility for warning others of a potential problem!

Yes, I am mandated to report to county officials health violations. No, they didn't act, because they're swamped. I took the issue to Jack's HQ, and from what I am told they dealt with the problem quickly and effectively, eliminating the potential for harm to the general public. They also thanked me for pointing out a serious problem and for helping them in identifying the causes and people involved.

I wonder what would have happened if I said nothing? I guess I could have used the overtime pay, lol.

well, i worked at a jack in the box and there were maggots crawling around in the taco sauce they put in the tacos. it is supposed to be remade every day but this taco sauce had been sitting out for about 3 or 4 days. i said something to manager and showed him the maggots and he told me to just keep quiet about it. i have no reason to make this up.
