Alitalia: Flyer Beware
Last Summer on a trip to Italy and Israel, we flew Alitalia. Due to the long flight and personal physical conditions we upgraded to business class. Actually, we wanted business class only to Italy and then coach to Israel, but we were told by Alitalia reservation representative that we couldn’t do that. However, given the significant additional costs, we asked Alitalia representatives about the difference between business and coach. They repeatedly told us that in both flights the seats would fully recline and the seats would be much larger than coach seats. While this was true on the Miami-Milan flight, it was not true on the Milan to Tel Aviv flight. In fact, the only real difference between coach and business on the second flight was a curtain separating the cabins. Also, while the service on the Miami - Milan flight was consistent with a good business class cabin, the in-flight service from Milan to Tel Aviv was poor, even for coach cabin.
Upon our return to the states, Alitalia customer service disregarded our complaints and never even got back to us after repeated telephone calls and letters. Finally, they offered us $1,000 on an $8,800 upgrade for four people.
We found the Alitalia website was at best incomplete, if not in my opinion misleading. I strongly believe that the reservation people were repeatedly providing inaccurate information and the customer service representatives are totally unconcerned with Alitalia’s passengers.
So, if you book a flight on Alitalia - be careful.
